The great thumb debate

Just got back into racing at xmas after 20 years off. Driving a lazer and a fs the last few weeks has got me thinking just how much nowadays is it about the cars or the thumbs?
Back in the day I was a fairly good driver A final 1st or 2nd most of the time at club level. nowadays it seems like most of the cars are pretty much simliar so its more about the thumbs.
To try and prove this I bought the cheapest lazer I could get hold of (50quid off ebay) and set it up with the cheapest hongkong crap I could get 13 pound lipos etc
still ended up A 2nd yesterday and B 1st on sunday( mainly due to the heat i was put in)
but the point is! back in the day it was all about matching cells setting the car up right having the top car etc nowadays to me it purely comes down to how good your thumbs are what do you guys think. Im sure there are a few oldies out there like me:lol:

I have to say you need to have a car setup right for the track, but alot of it is drivers skills. ask Minke he will tell you its 100% car not driver :lol:

I think it is down to the car as well because when I was running the Cat'98 I was always at the lower end of the B or C final but on the first time out with the B44 I was about 6 places up on my best precious result!

Thats not so much a case of 'the car' as 'the right car'. Different models have different characteristics so can suit different people. I always found that Cat a bit of a handful, the D4 was much more stable. And then the XX4 more stable than the D4 (but less reliable). So now I have a Bmax, because I go best with a stable, neutral car. Others prefer something more aggressive and say the Bmax lacks steering. You just need the car for you.

But otherwise yes - I agree Martin. I never really understood why Captainlip upgraded his B4 RTR so quickly. I'm pretty sure in the right hands the B4.1 Brushless RTR could win club A finals easily.

hey i was getting quick in the b4

muuuuuch faster with the rango tho.

No, I don't mean moving over to the Durango. That is simply because 4wds are quicker.
I meant upgrading the motor, radio etc. Yes the stuff you fitted was better, but in actual fact I reckon the basic car is quite good enough to be a winner.
