32bit or 64bit Win 7

Which is better, thinking of going Win7.

HarlowS 28-02-2011 08:01 PM

It only matters if you want more than 3gb of ram. I'd go 64bit - but I guess it's just a bit less compatible

DCM 28-02-2011 08:11 PM

Energy Efficient AMD Athlon™ X2 Dual-Core Processor 4450e, which states it is AMD64 (64bit), and am currently running 4Gb memory on a Vista Home Premium 32bit OS.

Then you're already over the limit and have lots of ram sat doing nothing

If your running a 64bit chip it makes no sense opting for a 32bit OS. Go the 64 route

DCM 28-02-2011 08:43 PM

Right, well time to hunt down cheap deals on Win7 64bit

mark christopher 28-02-2011 10:27 PM

are drivers harder to get for 64 bit?

DCM 28-02-2011 10:30 PM

Wouldn't of thought so, 64bit machines been about for a while now?

mikeyscott 28-02-2011 10:33 PM

www.overclockers.co.uk are pretty good.

coolcars782 28-02-2011 10:35 PM

I have 64bit Win7 and I have never have any problems with it :D My laptop is a Acer 5551, AMD Athlon II x2 2.1ghz, ATI HD 4250 1405mb Graphics, 3gb DDR3 Ram, and runs fine :)

bigred5765 28-02-2011 10:37 PM

been running win7 64 on a dell amd laptop had no troubles in any way driver or software

Cream 28-02-2011 10:45 PM

Windows 7 64bit for the win :-) Only compatabilty problems I've had are REALLY old games. Other than that it's been plain sailing, and you'll get to use that 1 gig of memory your P.C. hasn't been using :-)

Thanks guys, will invest in a one next month.... now, any advantage buying any more than Home Premium?

4GB is the limit for a 32 bit machine. XP could only address 3GB but the newer os's can address all 4gb

Amazon have some good deals using the 'other sellers option', Home Premium £114 or 27 new from £50, Ultimate £168 or 34new from £71, add a couple of quid for postage.
