Pinions

I think my problem with the shark for a long time has been gearing, so after a long time trying to figure things out (and I am a very slow learner), I've ordered myself a 9 or 10 tooth pinion from RW (should hopefully have it and a newish speedo to have a setup and possibly a run at hereford on friday).

Silly question maybe, but just need something confirming. If I can't get a pinion small enough to stop my motor and speedo burning out, do I get a bigger or smaller spur gear?

(I have been offerend the lend of a 10 tooth pinion (thanks), but I want to get some testing doing before turning upto another national and going home with a dead car after practice).

What motor you using, and also what wheels/tyres? Also what kind of track e.g, fast, slow, high grip e.t.c?

Bigger

The last motor I used was a lose excelleron I think, blue thing that I got from someon on oople. I'm now using a Noram 7t with a 2.3mm shaft which is causing so many problems getting a pinion the right size. I think the pinion I was using was just too big, something like 13 or 14, and I'm going off what other people have wrote about motors getting hot running 10 and 11 tooth pinions, and I don't want to burn out any more electrics.

The car is the shark, and I'll be running at Hereford and Ardent (hopefully gonna go practice at Ardent the Saturday before the next off road meet). Wheels and tyres, white / yellow rally blocks.

i start at 10/49 and if i lower the spur by 4 then i higher the pinion by 4 etc

Think my car must be running a 45 tooth spur, as the 10 tooth comes no where near it. Have order two 49tooth spurs so should have them in time to fit, test and race next weekend.

13/45 should be spot on just in case you dont wanna fit your 49 yet,

put it this way, the guy that gets the most laps and best times at our track runs 13/45, and when i say his car is fast its an understatement

I was running a 13 / 45 at rd1, and burnt out the motor / speedo in 4 mins of practice. I didn't think I'd overgeared it, but I must have.

New spurs came this morning from SMD, although it sounded like the apocalypse the way the postman knocked on the door this morning. Changed from the 45teeth spur to the 49 (ordered two just in case). That is fiddly as fuck though, and I wouldn't want to be doing that again in a hurry. Mesh sounds nice enough, just got to fit my electrics this afternoon and test a little.

One thing I've noticed though, is I've a got a lot of wheel wobble on all four wheels which I'm not too happy about. Has anyone else managed to get rid of this or is just something I'm going to have to put up with?

have you got the alloy wheel hexes as the kit ones can wear and cause some wheel wobble

sldmodels 01-03-2011 10:24 PM

I'm still on the plastic ones, it's not had many runs. That could be it then, thanks :)

sldmodels 01-03-2011 10:44 PM

erm, I just checked and they are alloy hexes

i'm thinking it can be 1 of 2 other causes then, try this first, on the knuckles you have 2 holes where the pivot balls sit and they have an alloy thread that goes on top of the pivot balls (bottom right in pic in the link below) , tighten these up untill you cant turn the hubs then loosen by a quarter of a turn, or until you can turn the hubs .....has this cured it,

if not check hub bearings are ok
