there's a new MBP coming soon so the older C2D models are likely to be within budget

Zero point going for a 6 core chip on a desktop let alone a laptop, wait a little bit for more Sandy Bridge based machines to show up. Faster than the current Core iX chips and more power efficient too.

The new CPU's have a four digit model number, eg Core i5 2520M.

I'd usually suggest looking at HP laptops but the latest one's we've been getting through at work have a 'Clickpad' instead of proper buttons which is horrid!

Currently reading this on a Dell Precision M4500 i7 - I like it, but then again I didn't pay for it ;)

What do you need from it? I'm currently on an Asus 1215n netbook. I thought I would need my desktop as well so spent money on that before christmas. Got this little beast for crimbo and the desktop hasn't been on since.

For general use I don't know why anyone needs more than this. Nice sized keyboard, big enough screen to be usable and still small enough to be properly portable. Great battery life. Dual core atom CPU has got enough oomph, you'd be surprised.

I don't understand massive laptops, to me it sort defeats the point of it being a laptop (something that can be portable).

The gf has a macbook and that is a nice bit of kit. If you don't mind using OSX its hard to look past them if you can afford one.
