Oil thinkness difference
 
How far apart in thickness for diff oils do people go to?

Found my car very pointing today and too much on power steering.

15k front and 7k rear. Ultimate racing oils

Was going to go back to 12.5k in the front.

Bumpy ish, flowing astro turf track

ive just done all my fluids!

35wt in the shocks
12.5k in the front and 7k in the rear

but i havent tried it yet :lol:

The only thing I know is if the front and rear is too far apart the backend gets dragged round the track like a fwd car.

What I want to know is what is the rule of thumb regarding what range of oils to use on what surface or is it just personal preference????

As I've ran ball diffs all my life and never ran nitro any input would be appreciated. :)

Bring the the difference between lower, try 10k in the front. The car should push more from the rear, but if the backend breaks away it's harder to get it back or another word impossible especially coming onto the fast bits. So when you plant the throttle be sure you want too. :lol:

is there's a solid rule of thumb to follow? ie, lower wt oil for low traction tracks and higher wt for high grip?

I found a few times when running my B44 I could use a spool in the front which reduced my turning ability, but my forward traction was crazy and very stable under heavy braking.

I'm on the book 10k/5k at the moment, but tempted to start playing around with things to see what effect it has. Ideally I guess this is running the car on 10k/5k and swapping lower/higher down club so the track remains the same...

Certainly in rallycross the less grip you have the thinner diff oil you can use to get the traction back.

I would imagine the same principles apply to 10th scale

So heading back to my base 12.5 / 7k set-up will be a good start.

Adam's Argent setup sheet lists traction as low and using 5k/2k oils...
James' RHR setup - high grip - 12.5k/7k

I think I'll try that tomorrow night and just live with it unless it's terrible and then I'll go back to 10k/5k

It does seem to follow a pattern like Chris says. Only 1 way to find out. Do it :D

well I popped open the diffs between rounds at club and they were almost empty lol. the gears were oily, but they weren't full at all. I don't even have a leak from the front diff...

7k/3k worked well on low traction. initially the car pushed a lot, but after a couple of laps it felt better.

rear diff still leaks so need to replace those O rings I feel

Cool. I'll try 10k & 5k ultimate if it's damp like last time at TORCH.

Just got to think about EPR too. Would be handy for a set of low grip diffs already done. Mmm

From a dry diff setup, say at southport. Would people run lower weight oils for a wet setup ?

depending how smooth you drive and how low the grip is you could even go lower than that, 5k and 2k

If your the kind of driver that likes to mash the throttle and throw the car around then a light diff oil setup might not work so well

PS - I'm doing some 410 testing soon so I'll have a better understanding how 10th scale geared diffs compare to 8th scale geared diff setups

Got a selection of diff oils from team magic, losi and Ultimate.

Now I've always made sure I've stuck with same brand all round, but tonight I've found 10k Losi to be thicker than 12.5 Ultimate :( so wasted my time doing the diff.

Typical.. Got different brands as, given team magic stuff, losi was cheap from the US and Ultimate is what I got for Petit and common with other people's setups.

Is there no standard re the weight or is it a bit of a lottery as to who provides the most consistent stuff etc. Seems to be a bit like shock oils again..

Grip was up at TORCH today and found the 15k / 7k set-up hardwork. Tempted to make the rear 10k and then go from there.

All the grip seemed to be on the front end, yet the set-up was similar to a couple of weeks back.
