Help my car is slow!!!

I've been buying up all I can to get started in 1/10th off road racing, and thought i'd made some good purchases in order to be reasonably competitive, but my car seems slow and i'm not sure why. Any ideas??

I have a rc10 b3 with stealth transmission and general upgrades. But ultimately i'm running it with a Reedy Mr 10x1 and a Novak Dually Speed Control. The gears are 81 tooth spur and 23 tooth pinion. I'm using 4200nimh's and the car seems slow like an old tamiya running a 540 stock motor. Am I missing something obvious here?

Are you sure the ESC is reaching the limits? I guess the lights should change when they reach full power, maybe it just needs setting up again.
as for the 10x1 - a very fast motor and just about quicker than I've ever raced with in 2WD. Perhaps it needs skim / brushes? a 19turn can be pretty decent in 2WD so a 10x1 should be very nippy.
Another thing could be your wiring, what connectors etc are you using.

chrisbryan800 30-10-2007 04:15 PM

Cheers Jimmy, I suppose I could reset the esc, it's the one touch setup version so I figured pretty fool-proof even for the likes of me. On the wiring front, I did have to solder some wire together to get the esc postive to reach both the motor and battery pack. As for connections i'm using corrally male-female types!

I think the job is reasonably neat, although i'm no expert, and would this cause enough of a problem to make the car that slow?

Elliott Hopkins 30-10-2007 04:18 PM

The pinion might be a touch too big?

Southwell 30-10-2007 04:20 PM

Nah, pinion wont make that much difference. slipper not slipping is it?

Try that, if no luck take motor out and put it accross the cells, see if it spins up properly. Just do it once though, there is the slight chance you can throw winds doing this.

chrisbryan800 30-10-2007 04:32 PM

Sorry to sound stupid, but how do I check the slipper clutch? Anyone have instructions?

Southwell 30-10-2007 04:33 PM

When you hot full throttle from a standstill does the car sit there revving it's nuts off?

chrisbryan800 30-10-2007 04:39 PM

Na, I gues that means it's ok? The problem is it doesn't hot throttle anywhere! It just seems to be running at 70% the pace i'd expect it to .
The ESC set up guide says hold the throttle full forward while the redlight turns to green, then as it turns to a flashing light pull the throttle back to full brake postion and that's it! Wonder if there's an art to this and the ESC thinks my full throttle isn't actually full throttle if you get my drift. Anyone had any experience with the Novak Dually? As i'm pretty sure the motors in pretty good nick, unless the timing's way out? (I bought it second hand you see)

Southwell 30-10-2007 04:47 PM

I would run it on cells personally, you should here it wind up quickly and kinda sing at full speed. Most of these problems are motor related.
Then again it could be a fet on the speedo or a dodgy transmitter, you just have to work through a list of things that could stop it working as a process of elimination.

antnee 30-10-2007 04:49 PM

have a look through the brush hood(the bit at the top) and see if you can see the comm, if you can see it, if its very black you need to skim it, what condition are the brushes in too?

chrisbryan800 30-10-2007 04:50 PM

Cheers Southwell

My problem is i'm completely shooting in the dark as i'm brand new to this, and my car is made of secondhand bit's so don't have the experience to work it out.

What's a slow fet?, and how do I run the motor on the cells is it easy?

mattym0310 30-10-2007 04:58 PM

running thr motor on the cells basically means, connect the positive and negative of the motor straight up to the cells. but make sure you dont do this for too long or too many times as, like southwell said, it could throw a wind.. which will mean curtains for it.
have you checked the colour of the comm as suggested by antnee as this could well be your problem??

hope this helps :D

Southwell 30-10-2007 05:03 PM

Sorry, meant just fet. They are the fins that stick out the speedo. If one blows you normally get poor performance, but normally the speedo blows to be honist.

To run the motor put the + of the battery onto the + of the motor and same on the -, make sure you disconnect the speedo first though.

chrisbryan800 30-10-2007 05:19 PM

Cheers I'll give all those ideas a whirl, and see if I can't solve it! Although now you mention fet, the speedcontrol is a tiny bit melted round one of them?? :( (figured it was an old soldering accident or something!, suppose that could be the problem after all!!!!)

sosidge 30-10-2007 05:22 PM

Reedy Mr series is an old, old motor, it could well be totally knackered.

Best bet if you have zero experience is to talk to someone face to face, get yourself down to your friendly local club or RC expert shop and I'm sure you will get some help with the car.

Tom3012 30-10-2007 05:27 PM

Hi there....

take it down to your local track, most of the guys there should be more than willing to help:).

i dont really know the spec of the speedo so i cant really help on that. as for the motor, any ideas as to how old it is? does it look in good condition? does it smell burnt? how does the comm look (it should be straight and relatively shiney)

I put an brand new pre 2k motor in my car just as 4200's came in and the motor destroyed itself within 3mins.

racingdwarf 30-10-2007 05:42 PM

This may have been said,But if your transmitter is second hand and is one with lots of settings like throttle high point it may be worth looking at,My kids are just starting to have a go and they use an old set of Ko I have,I have set the high point to 50% it,s a realy easy way to slow the car down for them.

KevLee 30-10-2007 05:46 PM

Are the cells second hand? You could have a cell gone. If you have more than one pack have you tried another set?

ashleyb4 30-10-2007 05:56 PM

Or the cells are totally dead i had a pack of IB3600 just go really slow on me even after a full charge. Also if you do want a new motor i have one for sale PM me if your interested.
