Finally the first test towers :D

After several weeks of tweaking the machine my first cnc'd prototypes are done.

These are nylon but I'm now all set for full production. Sorry for crapy pic.. :)

The mill itself will be upgraded as we go along but it's now no longer hit and hope... we have full software support and touch screen control. It's also a flat bed and can mill items out of material up to 50cm x 50cm area with a depth limit of 15cm.

Can mill most things but currently ideal items are sheet based. Hubs etc will happen eventually but not quite yet.

I'm well happy with the result :) ... going to cnc these out of 4mm CGF first and do some racing. Can of course do carbon Fibre or alloy too.

Will be making these services available publicly for small runs etc...give me a shout if interested in anything.

For another shock tower design look in the "I made this thread" I've posted these in there too with a couple of additions :)

SWEET!!!

That looks so awesome. Any idea on the price if say 20 people would buy both towers?

One thing I think A LOT of people would be interested in, is a carbon chassis and a front chassis plate.

Really awesome job man.

Very nice. Did you change the pistion of the dumper or it's similar at the origine product?

kaylon 08-01-2011 10:31 AM

Ben.. these are replacement items. I've not experimented with different mounting locations yet but once I get some more material to chew through I might :)

Fearo.. if 20 people wanted both towers that would be cool, but that's bulk production hehe. I'm not really aiming for that kinda production line. It would not be impossible to fill an order like that but would take quite a bit of time :) I'm looking at more individual kinda runs.

Atm standard replacement Ansmann Shock towers like these in 4mm Carbon Fibre currently would be £18 each and could get them to you within about a week.

I'm working on a T plate and battery brace atm. Have got the computer models finished just gotta run some tests and see how it goes. Might look into an alloy front chassis. It's not a flat item so would not work in carbon I don't think.

Thanks for the quick reply Kaylon.
What about the chassis itself? Would that even be a possibility?

kaylon 08-01-2011 01:29 PM

Yeah a chassis is possible. I've got a couple of designs that I'm working on as as soon as I have anything cool to show I will :)

I'll be making the first batch of CSC versions in the next few days. I love CSC, it's not as expensive as CF but basically just as good, it's got a little flexibility in it which suits me atm.

Can't wait to run them on my car :D

Thanks for the interest.

Oo, interesting...

What exactly is CSC? The Wikipedia disambiguation page for CSC is a long one, and none are engineering materials!

What sort of format would you need files in, and roughly how much would a custom CSC buggy chassis run to?

kaylon 10-01-2011 12:47 AM

CSC is a Carbon and Glass Fibre compound. It's basically what Schumacher call S1... The S1 version of the CATII and the Cougar both use something similar.

Depending on the thickness Glass fibre sheet is laced into a Carbon Fibre weave produce something that looks like carbon Fibre with many of it's properties but it's a bit heavier and has a tiny bit of flex in it.

To do set up and mill a full chassis plate out of 3mm CSC would be about £25-30. I'd have to adjust that depending on how much prep work is needed on the artwork and of course the size of the chassis. But that's still about a two thirds of the price for a Carbon Fibre one :)

Ideal Format would be Serif .dpp or Adobe .ai. Might be able to import .dwg also. The software for the mill uses vector based designs as it's file source.

No promise that I'd be able to do anything right from provided artwork.

we've never tried anything that big to be honest haha..bit scary :)

wow..that rear tower is £26.50! I'm under pricing myself LOL

Nice to find other stockists though. Thanks for the links.

I've ordered the aluminium shocktowers at that company, the rear shocktower was out of stock and will be delivered asap, the font shocktower arrived in good order. Here is it compared to the original plastic one:
