B4.1 RTR Speedo / Handset Issues RESOLVED
 

Bit of an odd one this so would love some input! :cry:

My son did 4 heats with his new car today and also practiced yesterday (new car) all working fine. 1 minute into his final today the speedo stopped working normally :thumbdown:.

The conclusion: The throttle appears to have lost its neutral position, almost hunting. The speedo is non adjustable and only the trim can be altered on the wheel throttle. No buttons have been changed on the controller as all was working fine :confused:.

With the trim at full 'forwards' position the speedo still gives slight reverse, if you throttle forwards it goes, but as soon as you let off it give full brakes and after 2 seconds reverses slowly.

When you turn the car on the speedo beeps and flashes green - steering works straight away. Only after maybe 40 seconds (or so...) will the forward and reverse work - of course the first thing to kick in is the reverse! :confused:.

Tried recalibrating the handset with the car and still no joy :o.

Mark Knight (MK Racing) had not seen this before and nothing else can be adjusted on either module - before I throw a hissy fit does anyone have any idea's?.

I was thinking a RTR for Adam would be good to start with but I'm thinking I should have bit the bullet and gone for the full spec as its all adjustable.

Take it back to whomever you bought it from, ask them to replace the ESC and TX with a new set.

Hopefully that will resolve any issues you have :)

Wouldn't surprise me if the throttle pot on the tranmitter itself has slipped out of place.

You might be able to fix it yourself if you take the back of the tranny, or it might be a return for repair job.

Ok, an update:

Tried the car using a spare 40mHz rec and trans, still the same issue, so that ruled out the radio gear.

Looked on google to try and hunt down a manual (didnt come in the box ) found a pdf here: http://teamassociated.com/pdf/cars_a...esc_manual.pdf and the ESC is programmable :woot::woot::woot::woot: which I didnt know.

Downloaded and set it up again. I think Adam must have had the trigger pulled (or something) when I turned his car on, which must have knocked the throttle out of sync.

Live and learn I guess. Shame he had to miss out on 3 legs of his final, would have doubled his track time yesterday. Oh well. Onwards and upwards..... Going to set the ESC up in advanced functions for him now.

Dudders, as an aside, how is the 4.1 RTR going for your son? Thinking of getting same for mine and getting an FT version for me. Son is nearly 6 but is dead keen on building car himself as he wants to know how it works.... good lad..

RTR is superb value for money, ideal for a starter car. Infact after coming back to the sport after 15 years out it might have done me for a year. Dont worry about speed, its quick enough to be competitive (reletive).

Depends on your sons competence. For Adam its a case of getting round the track cleanly, irrespective of speed / performance etc etc, which its doing it job for. He's come on so well. When you do start racing I would advise as much track time as possible for him - we go to the meetings early so he can have 1 hour at least driving round, makes a big difference for him.

I cant see the problem with it to be honest, it does what it says.

EDIT: I got the B4.1 for me so we could share spares, makes things so easy and cheaper!. Also it comes with full instructions to buy the RTR and strip it down, then rebuild.

I've seen a swathe of the B4.1 RTR brushless kits in Drop Inn Racing, Craigavon. The only niggle is that they're setup for US tracks, I do wish they'd do a UK edition, with the appropriate springs.

Good to know thanks - he is ok for a 6yo, the lazer had a 19t brushed in it and he was ok with EPA tweaked a bit. Does the RTR tranny or speedo have enough tweaks in it to reduce initial punch and top end? I know its not the greatest system in the world, but no matter what i get him, I expect him to break it at some point anyway so I won't spend £300 on an LRP system just yet... And that is the thing, he will break it, i will break mine I just don't want to break the bank either...

Are the springs that far out for a newcomer?

Fraid so - kit springs are brown fronts, green rears iirc, and for racing on astroturf or carpet as most UK tracks do, you're looking blue/silver fronts and silver rear (though occasionally the kit greens will be useful, on slippery surfaces like gym floors).

Tyres are probably best changed too, to Schumacher yellow of some type.

I also highly recommend the RPM wide front bumper - a lot of those B4.1s I mentioned have ended up pelting straight into the wall, first night!

I'm not an expert B4 driver, but I think that covers the basics.

Standard kit will be fine enough for a 6 year old. Yes you could change springs but it's not the end of the world if you don't.

Full throttle can be turned down with a knob on the controller easy enough.

It really would be a good basic start package.

They are good on batteries too, we can go 3 heats on one 5000 lipo.

Also to add the only thing he has broken is turnbuckles landing jumps sideways!!!
