Castor block/steering spindle bind
 

Having a mare trying to get my castor blocks/steering spindles built on the 502, sameparts as the 511/db01, basically the left binds when you turn right, and the right hand side binds when you turn left!!

Ironically I helped Rich D with this in the summer, but now can't do it myself, is there some trick to avoiding the binding problem??

Get carving some new castor blocks!... :D

Julian Beckett from our club had a neat solution to this Dave, ill get him to reply on this thread when i see him ! Involves heating up the steering spindles whilst threading a dowel through them as they arent perfectly inline. His went together mint first build after doing this the clever git :p

push a length of piano wire or such like, (even a screwdriver handle if you're a bit of a savage), - it wants to be a reasonably tight fit, through the C hub then heat it up GENTLY with a paint stripper gun or such like. Don't go mad tho, or you'll split it!

This softens the epoxy/carbon C hub sufficiently to allow the holes to align more accurately. I think the initial problem is probably shrinkage out of the moulds. Let it go stone cold then slide it off the piano wire. Job done.

Oh, by the way, whittling works to!

i like it...good ideas.....

they dont align perfectly, this is the problem... i get around it by using a small amount of brut force: i bend the steering block...which helps abit and them use froce to thread the screw in the correct angle.....even if the steering block is still slightly out..... ;)

I used to sort it by forcing the screw in at an angle too, but just found it hasn't worked this time, maybe it's a different batch of parts!

Lee, are you using the standard plastic front blocks, or the alloy ones?

car i have used so far has standard plastic items
my car thats built but not tested has alloy ones!!!! but the standard felt really good...so may change back to them lol
