Essential Hop ups for the DB01?
 

Chaps,

Quite fancy giving some indoor winter racing a go....first time really so looking for something simple and durable....and potentially competitive in the right hands!!

Although I suspect that I should be looking at a B44....I still seem to have a youth affinity with Tamiya....so, here I am...

Looking at the DB01......a local shop has one super discounted to about £150.....new....or, a couple of places online have the DB01-R.....for about £210....

All things being equal and my lack of patience, I'm very tempted to get the DB01 and go with that.....but, I know that it needs some hop up bits........the list however is endless!!

I suppose that by the time I buy a shell and tyres for the DB01-R.....I'm up to about £230.....

So, the question really is what are the essential hop ups for the DB01?

Would be really helpful if you could point me in the right direction?

Guessing a slipper clutch, some better dampers?

If you plan on running a motor in it like a 6.5 brushless i advise using the following:

51286 TRF501X diff halves x2
Aeration Dampers
Slipper
Aluminium Suspension Mounts front and rear
Universal Shafts at least at the Front, better also rear

Despite the fact that the especially the Aeration dampers are quite expensive bought seperately the DB01R is, and this has been mentioned many times before, the much better deal, even if you have to buy wheel, tires and Bodyset. I say, get the DB01R with a Baldre Bodyset and the Diff halves and you´re ready to fly!

A question....

With the DB01-R.....do you need to buy the Aeration Dampers too?

Looking at the spec, it seems that it has just the basic dampers with different springs?

Is it worth buying the Aeration dampers as a hop-up?

Also - I was thinking of a 7.5T brushless as a beginner.....enough for indoors?

Finally - any advice on tyre choice?

Aeration dampers are included.

Aeration Dampers Comw with the DB01R I am pretty certain.

Yes for sure, Aeration damper are included in the R. I have bought 3 so far so this is 100% true.
7.5 should be nice indoors for beginning :)
I never raced indoors but heard that on carpet people like the Schumacher Mini Pins in the yellow compound a lot. Don´t know this for sure though.
What i forgot is no matter if you buy the DB01R or Baldre or Durga you will need a hex screw set as the Phillips type screws are a pain. Here is a screw set on ebay:

Blimey :o £150! Shows you what the exchange rate does to things though, I bought mine a month after launch and paid about £80 for the kit from HK (as no one in the UK had it then).

+1 on what everyone else has already said. The only "essential" hop ups are dampers, slipper, 501X diff halves (on the rear) and alloy hingepin mounts. Everything else - as ever with Tamiya - is just down to how much bling you want and they do make some nice stuff.

after a bit of research I have found 3 types of Tamiya A-Arms that will fit this car (If I'm not mistaken).
Is this correct? WHat type of A-arms are the best for racing, and what type are the best for bashing (more flexible)?

TRF501 arms are the strongest. For racing, the high traction arms (TRF511 / DB01R) are ok too.

501X arms are tough and stiff
Durga/Baldre arms are flexible and tough, but screw holes are easier to strip
High Traction arms are in between in stiffness and the front ones are a bit weak, in my opinion.
High traction rear ones seem durable (extra webbing where it counts) and are nice in that they have shock mounting holes on both sides, so you could mount your shocks behind the arms.
