Newbie - What are you guys racing?

Recently back to Notts and thinking about popping down to try a little indoor winter racing/crashing....

Usual deal, raced a little as a kid and 20 odd years on fancy giving it a go again!!

Had a quick look and it seems that the mini class could be worth a go, cheaper and a good toe-in to starting racing....

But, equally....maybe looking at a 2 or 4wd buggy might be a bit more fun and easier to practise elsewhere with?

What do you guys tend to see more of at the club, or recommend?

Planning to try!! and get a car/kit this week and make next Friday......

Any advice/recommendations welcome!!

Hi there. When it comes to off road we have a good mix of models from Schumacher, Xfactory, Ansmann, Associated, Durango, Kyosho. I not clued up on touring cars i'm afraid so can't tell you much there but i'm sure someone will let you know whats good. The mini's are always popular and look like a good fun class. Pop along on a friday night and have a chat with any of the members they're a friendly bunch and will help you out. :thumbsup:

I would try and nip down before you go and spend your cash...

As Pat said do pop down and have a chat with us. Its the best way as you can see what people are racing and we can advise you on getting the most for your money.

Seeing as you used to race before you are going to love the new technology, no skimming, no dumping during a race and resiliant cars that will take a lot of abuse.

I agree with Pat and Rob. Buggies (2wd and 4wd) and Minis are very popular at the club. You might want to read this recent thread RE what kit to get, should you go down the buggy route:

If you like crashing a B4 or a SC10 are the cars to get!

There are facilities for dumping at our venue, just not on the track during a race please. :blush:

Couple of quick questions...

Tyres you're using on the carpet? (pins with inserts?)
Motor - seems I'm a bit stuck with this one, suspect that I should keep it quite tame to start with, but.....brushless systems seem quite £££ verses going a bit cheaper/slower with a brushed motor....any suggestions? I guess if you invest in brushless, you should get something a bit quicker?

most people use yellow schumacher pins with inserts and these are the control tyre for our sunday series.

Motor - although brushless are more £££ they don't need maintaining like a brushed system goes and you can pick up a decent one 2nd hand (either on ebay, or on the trader section of this site). They will last and many have a feature where you can limit the throttle if you want to get a quick system from the outset (I used to use a Losi Xcelorin system and that has the function, although you can also do this with many radios)

Are you wanting 2wd or 4wd buggy?

What about when the touring cars are on?:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: (that is meant to be my dumping face:p:p)

Trigger finger pulled.....just ordered a DB01-R.....couldn't decide between 2 or 4wd....figured 4wd easier for playing around/learning outdoors with...and maybe that the Tamiya might take a better battering!!

Do you guys have recommended local shop? Will try to grab all of the other bits needed locally....

Will have a look for brushless motors.....

One of the club members Chris Brown uses a DB 01 when he races 4wd. Hopefully he'll see this thread and offer some advice. Also on the Shop front Dave Dodd who also races at Bridgford runs a model shop too. :thumbsup:

Dave also rips front wheels off his Mini/Fiesta regularly. :lol:

Congrats on the new purchase.

If you plan to buy a brushless motor then you will also need a brushless esc. Plenty of decent combos out there however.

Also, what batteries are you planning to get?

DB01r is a fine choice. Dont think it comes with a bodyshell does it?
Everything else on the kit is great. The biggest thing you need are the tyres as mentioned before. You can send me a pm if you have any specific problems. I will try to remember to bring mine on friday if you want a chat.

Chris - I may well rattle you to find out about basic set-up.....not sure if the car will arrive in time to build for Friday but I'll pop down anyways and say hello...

The kit didn't come with a shell or wheels/tyres...have gone for the Baldre....

Would be really useful to know what to order as far as tyres? (for indoors and outdoors, and these insert things!!)....?

Lipos I'm looking at Vampire.....and maybe order an intellect later on....

Motor Combo.....thinking Xcelorin as they seem reasonably priced.....6.5T or 7.5T, then restrict as needed!!

The question is, how long will it take me to build it!!......a while suspect!!...factoring in some major input error!!

Tyres/Inserts: Schumacher Yellow Minipins with blue foam inserts for indoors. Schumacher Yellow Minispikes with blue foam inserts for outdoors.

Motor: I'd go for a 6.5 and then turn it down. 6.5 is fine for 4WD

Re. "major input error to the build"; it sounds like you'll be joining Team Shambles. You can only join Team OCD if you:

a) naturally dust of your car after every race with a soft-bristled brush
b) align your allen drivers neatly on your pit table in size order
c) keep your pit table clean, free of graffiti and holes
d) wash your pit towel regularly on a delicate cycle to keep it clean & smelling fresh
e) only use gaffer tape for sticking the carpet together, not for holding critical car components together
f) have zip-ties in your pit box to lend to Shambles drivers, not for using on your own car (unless this is to keep your wiring super-neat).

Tamiya instructions are some of the best in the business so I am sure you won't have a problem building it. Just make sure you have a decent set of tools and you will be fine.

Regarding the lipos the difference between any of the lipos is minimal. I wouldn't think there is very little difference between the vampires and the intellects or any other make of battery that is on the BRCA list. Just make sure it is hard cased and will fit in your car.
