OMG car insurance

Just got my renewal through from Privilege which is due at the end of the Month for £560! It was £330 last year and I've gained a years no claims lol :woot:

Direct line want £712! They're not on price comparison websites you know, so charge twice as much as the ones that are! Crazy!

Luckily Admiral only want £324 and will repair my windscreen for free, something Privilege wanted £10 for!

For reference I'm 29 with the mrs as a named driver (24). Car is a '98 mk4 golf TDI 110bhp at £2500. 12k/pa mileage and living in HR6. :)

I hate insurance companies with an absolute passion. They are the least regulated industry out there, seemingly given free will to do as they please without repurcussion. Everyone harps on about banks, but what have banks actually done that affects the average person. Insurance companies affect every single person out there but they never receive bad press grrr

+1 for admiral. My son is 23 with just 1 years ncb and will pay just £707.39 for his imported MR2 GTS turbo with mods at 300bhp which I think is group 20 with his 21 yr old sister added for just 80pence. Last year as anew driver his policy cost hom £1060
last year car ins companies paid out 95p for every 100p taken in. On top of that they had to pay wages rent etc

Car insurance has rocketed big time.

In the past iv ran group 20 insurance Bmw M3's and at the mo im running in a cheap 206 gti. Insurance renewal for me 32 and 9 years ncb was coming in at £700, i got it down to a more reasonable £500, but its still extortionate.

My mate was ripping me big time, he is 34 and drives a shitbox fiesta 1.3 , and laughing at how much mine has gone up, his renewal came thorugh a month later for £650.. Never laughed so much in my life ha ha..

£560 is nothing, i am looking for my first car at 17 and the cheapest quote on various comparison websites for a 1.2 fiesta is £5,100 and thats third party only!

Its not, yours is just dear because of your age and risk. When i was 17 it was about £1300 for a nova 1.3 sr with group 5 insurance.

Your best of getting to be a named driver maybe for a year or 2 as it will bring the price down, also don't be put off looking for a more expensive car but with less insurance ie a newer car with a lower group ie group 1 etc etc.

One of the main reasons insurance premiums are going up is because of the cost per claim rocketing partly due to the ambulance chaser no win no fee companies out there. The other reason is that cars these days even in a low speed shunt cost so much more to repair - multiple air bags, super soft crumple zones, etc.

Another reason some companies quote stupidly high premiums is that they don't want the business but don't want to admit it! Other companies will be cheap because they are trying to build market share.
They're often the ones that are dirt cheap one year and then expensive the next. You'd be amazed at the number of people who don't shop around so just stay with their company at renewal.

One of the reasons insurance prices have gone up so much is because it snowed last year, and as such there were more claims...

That's what Quinn Direct told my mate when he rang up and asked why his had gone up so much when he hadnt had any convictions or claims.

That's a load of BS. Banks have given the average person a £1200 a year tax increase to pay for us keeping our savings because of their mistakes - bailing them out so we don't lose our savings. Insurance companies have been making losses hand over fist, and giving us cheap car insurance. In making sure that they get your business through comparison sites, they have chopped their prices ad we've had a couple of years of bargains. Oh, and insurance companies are regulated to hell by the FSA, which also adds to their costs and our prices.

And there is the other reason. If you had the chance to get a few grand by claiming whiplash ot anything else, would you turn it down? No. So, to some extent, we are the people driving up the prices!! Add to that the Courts awarding more damages to deserving cases because the costs of maintaining disabled people, the huge costs of small shunts, and it all adds up.

Yeah, and my mate told me that the tooth fairy exists!! For the last five years, car insurance has been making losses for everyone. They make their money by selling you all sorts of other insurance once you have bought their car insurance. If we are talking rip-off, look at this data. If you have home insurance, for every £1 you pay them, they pay out 55p (55%) for claims, for travel insurance it is 40%, and payment protection insurance is 19%. If you've got any of those you really are being ripped off!

I know it's unpopular, but please check facts. Car insurance was cheap, and it's about to get back to a level where businesses can make a return to their shareholders - and our pension and savings funds. Oh, and watch out for their next big trick - they won't give you the cheap deal if you have not been with your current insurer for at least two years. All you policy hoppers are about to pay even more!! Oh how I love a good business strategist!!

smokes 13-11-2010 10:53 AM

isn't also that they had to pay out a bundle, for peoples house being flooded and they have to recover the costs back.i wish insurance would never insure properties built on flood plains. that way alot properties would be built on place that are designed to be flooded! And don't mention flood defenses all that does is move the problem else where that wasn't designated a flood plain i.e a large city thus costing insurers more money!
