Stupid Question: End Points

Okay, I've been doing this RC lark for a million years, but i've only ever set my 100% end points to be the point where maximum lock possible is.

Then I set the car up to work with that amount of steering.

Could I be doing it a different way - ie less lock, but an equivalent amount of turn-in?

It's very unlikely that the EPA will be 100% in any car, ever.

First, set the dual-rate to 100%. Then, set the EPA so that the steering reaches full lock, no more, no less, without straining the servo. Obviously the steering linkages will already have been set up evenly, and the servo sub-trim will be used to set the servo neutral position.

You can now use the dual rate control to decrease steering lock if the track requires it. I generally start with enough lock to turn full circle in the narrowest normal section of the track, would rarely go more than 10% different from that.

To change the feel of the car on small stick movements, use the exponential - NOT the dual rate. Again, only 10% adjustment should be needed - more than that and you start to mask the cars handling problems and end up with controls that are far from linear.

Simon, I presume you have checked the turning circles are the same left and right too?

If I make it down to TORCH on Sunday remind me and I'll try and run through it with you.

its not a 12th scale kieth!!!!!!!

KRob 23-09-2010 10:03 AM

Yeah, theses are just toys, not proper racing!
Maybe if you'd checked your turning circles you wouldn't have been so useless with a 12th...:woot:

Lee Martin 23-09-2010 10:06 AM

hey! 1 12th race 1 win...thats 100% unbeaten in the last 5 years!! ;)

Lee Martin 23-09-2010 10:07 AM

almost as good as my micro record!!

Crash 23-09-2010 11:25 AM

I'm pretty sure my turning circles left and right are subtly different but i've never really tried to figure out why! Ooops!
I'm starting to think i should pay a little more attention to it now!!

simoncrabb 23-09-2010 02:06 PM

yeah yeah, I've done all the above.

What I mean is, should we run buggies with the maximum lock available?

KRob 23-09-2010 05:19 PM

I run what I have to so the car feels comfortable, normally between 90% - 95%. I get this from running as much lock as I can before the car loses the 'smooth' feel I want it to have. As I mentioned though that might be a legacy of my 12th racing.
I'm sure I've had this conversation with Chris Doughty and he said he always runs 100%.
I have a feeling most drivers will say yes they run 100% but I would suggest see what suits you.

Northy 23-09-2010 06:45 PM

100% here and just move the stick a bit less it its too much :woot:

russmini 23-09-2010 06:51 PM

I set mine down a bit for a new track i visit, or even just the first run of the day. Then i see how it feels over a few laps. Most time it will need turning up a bit. Ususally done at 5% increments. I'll keep adding a little, till i make mistakes a bit too often overcooking it.

As you will have guessed, i'm not the best driver in the world and thats why i use this approach, to try and help myself out a little. It's what feels good to me that counts.

Just been and looked at my transmitter (KO EX10) settings and ST TRAVEL is set to 130%. Is this good or bad?
if my memory serves me right this is the mechanical maximum steering lock on my BJ4WE minus about 5% to make it a touch easier to drive (only race at TORCH at the moment).

When I was using my Helios I think it was much lower. I do make sure the turn amount is the same via a setup board etc.

Now running a dx3r and increase the travel for 4wd at silverstone

It may be that your servo horn is a little too short.
This can mess up the geometry of the steering a bit if its excessive (it will feel like you have negative expo)
