Servo in a 2WD buggy?

I'm searching for a servo to have in a 2WD buggy. I don't have any idea how fast and strong it should be. So please! Give me some advice of which servo I should buy? Not Bluebird because I've had some bad experience with them and some of my friends too...

sanwa/airtronics or hitec are good brands.

Any 4 digit KO servo is quality, under 0.1 is reasonably fast, 0.06 VERY fast. In 2wd 0.09 is about good enough for almost anyone and if from a decent manufacturer (KO, futaba, sanwa) don't worry about torque too much.

Metal gears are nice to bullet proof it some!

I use a futaba 9402 in my 2wd and 4wd. Its pretty fast, yes not as quick as the servo Dan uses (or everyone else) but quick enough for me.

But I guess its a bit pricey (£60) so what about Ace (thunder tiger)servos. I hear that they are a lot cheaper than KO/Futaba etc but just as quick.

The ace servos are pretty much bomb proof.

a bit slower than the fastest ko out there but they have silly ammounts of torque, lots of the 1/8th rallyX guys use them and haven't heard any complaints

i'm currently using an old futaba 9402 on my RB5.
it's not cheap and it's not digital.

but it has metal gears, bearings and lasts a long time. mine is probably 5 yrs old now and has had a tour of duty in an 1/8 buggy too.

i use a KO pds-2123 0.06 seconds i wouldnt swap it for anything

I found this servo. Damn its cheap and fast!:o What do you think about it?:)

Thats a good servo indeed.. It's not digital though, hence why it is cheaper.

That's no great disadvantage but you CANNOT run it with a digital radio system IE. Futaba 3vcs, KO type R or any Spektrum systems.

caneye 24-09-2007 02:57 AM

huh? what do you mean you cannot run it with a digital radio system???
i've got an analogue servo that i use with my 3PJ & 3PJS. it works perfectly fine with the PCM module AND Spektrum modules.

i thought only futaba HRS modules require digital servos ... please correct me if i'm wrong.

Body Paint 24-09-2007 07:25 AM

As far as I'm aware all spektrum sets are digital. You can run an analogue servo with a digital radio but sooner or later the servo is going to pack in.

Thanks Body Paint for the information. I think I go for this one instead beacuse it's digital. And I'm going to use a Futaba 3PM 2.4Ghz radio system. Don't want to destroy a expensive servo just because I didn't bought a digital in the first place.

Thank You!

How's that work

Very wise ;)

I am no electronics engineer, but, it is something to do with the digital signal being faster than analogue. I have derrived this after reading lots of information from KO, Futaba and Spektrum, all of which state that damage will be caused to analogue servos by digital signal.

In fact some analogue servos simply don't work at all with digital radios ie. Hi-Tec

I found out the hard way when I got my 3VCS HRS by blowing 2 analogue servos in 3 weeks. I also have experience of several non-believers in the theory blowing analogue servos with spektrum systems. DG being one of them.

I had problems with a digital servo and my std 3VC. It sometimes took my pit bitch two attempts at turning the car on before the servo came to life.

you can run analogue servos with spekturm and type R transmitters fine. I have been using them for the past few years!!
The only beneifit of the digital that i understood was that you would get a slightly higher response time with the type R transmitter if it was in digital mode. But you can de-activate that to use analogue servos. (imagine the futaba system works in a similar way)

i'm guessing that an analogue servo wouldn't work at all if fed a digital signal? as opposed to working for a while and then packing up?

Body Paint 24-09-2007 02:25 PM

JIM: You have just contradicted yourself :wtf:

I have noticed that the Type R KO's seem less likely to blow an analogue servo although I have seen it happen once. The problem is far more evident with Futabas HRS and with the newer spektrums.

I think in this instance it is far more prudent for Tobbe to spend the extra £10 and KNOW that the servo will work with any radio system.
