511 What have you broken or replaced?

Hi,

So far I've bent a shock shaft, and snapped one of the legs off a front upper deck. I've also replaced the front shock tower as it was cracked when I bought the car.

I'm putting in a big order for spares and want to make sure I get the majority of things that I might break

Thanks

Matt

How on earth did you do that top deck?

makinwaves 16-09-2010 08:33 AM

Replaced ball studs and cups with the Losi/ HB combo, rear uprights with ally ones.

Broken two steering bellcranks, one castor block, one steering knuckle and an original front wishbone.

Now have all ally steering set and castor blocks and TRF501X front wishbones

Bling tastic! and (hopefully) bullet proof.

I got hit by a car at taplow (another 511) that jumped short on the cross over. The shock shaft bent badly and the topdeck snapped. Everything else looks ok.

Just shock towers and wishbones for me. They usually crack. Pm me if you want to buy some spare towers NIP

Cheers :)

front wishbones . thay are verry weak.
raplaced them with 501 now:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Welshy40 16-09-2010 10:51 AM

Front castor block, rear hub, layshaft and thats it but plastics are far to brittle.

GRIFF55 16-09-2010 11:05 AM

just front wishbones and hingepins (using 501 wishbones).

as for spares i'd get:
wishbones
diff plates
diff and centre pulleys
belts
shock shafts
shock towers
wing mounts.

this is just to carry incase they break or wear.

I doubt you will need any of them for a long time!!

If I may take part of this, even though I have a 501...

What I've broken...
- When I used 511 A arms, I broke those a few times.
- One rear shock tower got cracked after a lot of abuse.
- Bent a few front shock shafts when hitting hard things.
- One rear axle.

What has been installed / replaced...
- Alloy steering parts
- Alloy C-hubs
- Gear diffs
- Kyosho "hard" ball cups and studs
- Titanium turnbuckles

Broken a front wishbone and a shock eyelet. big head on crash.
Replaced the Tamiya 91t spur for an associated 87t
Thats all so far.

I got hit by a back marker whilst lapping and unluckily got pushed into the path of Matt. Gutted as the only damage that I had was a bent shock screw, and the worst part is poor Matt couldnt race after that.

I believe that the wishbones are weak to stop you bending alloy. I've got the 501 wishbones, however I think that i'm going to original kit wishbones.

You need something to give.

GRIFF55 16-09-2010 11:58 AM

501 ones are stronger and they WILL break before the alloy bends matt:thumbsup:

They won't just ask smartalec, he's bent a couple of sets of the front bulkheads.

There is a reason the 511 has weaker front wishbones, otherwise the 501 wishbones would be standard.

MikePimlott 16-09-2010 12:28 PM

I run the 511 ones so that they break before bending something.

I love my blue

GRIFF55 16-09-2010 12:33 PM

agreed, but i think springer has done bulkheads in more of a crash than would just broke a wishbone. I've broke a couple of 501 wishbones and my alloy is all sound. It takes one hell of a crash to bend bulkheads, ask daveg28!

Come on Dave enlighten us.

Where did you get replacement ones from?

AaronR 16-09-2010 12:50 PM

Ha, you guys are correct! I use 501X front arms too on my 511. If an arm breaks, it always takes a hinge pin with it!

As said above too... original plastic castor blocks break too easy. Spend the money on the aluminum and never worry about them again!

Errr I sort of went a bit nuts at the end of a bad race during a bad weekend, ramped it and landed axle first against a concrete block...snapped the axle in 2 and bent one of the rear bulkheads...nothing a gas hob and pair of mollgrips couldn't fix though  that's also the only time this year I've bent a hingepin!

The reason for the weaker/softer wishbones by the way is that they supposedly increase traction, NOT to protect other parts. They even put on the packets I think to use the 501 wishbones for strength but the 511 wishbones for racing, they wouldn't if it was to protect the alloy!

As for spares, I'd get:

Wishbones
Shock towers
Shock shafts
Hingepins
Front upright/steering spindle
Spare drivetrain bits for maintenance!

I've gone thru no end of front shock towers since switching to the Ali top shock bushings by the way, whereas I used to just bend top shock screws!

DaveG28 16-09-2010 01:46 PM

Oh, and nowhere stocks bulkheads precisely because they are so difficult to damage!!! If you really need them then Champ will order them in from Tamiya Japan, or Speedtechrc will order them in from Tamiya USA
