Losi 4 Gear Gearbox

Hello,

Just seen someone's add for a CR2 that has a 4 gear gearbox - does anyone have any idea how this is done? seems like a good plan to me!

Its a 2 machined pieces of plastic, theres a guy on here who makes them called Nick

Gareth Jones 25-08-2010 08:15 PM

Got any idea how much he charges for them? and how to contact him??

Hi made a small batch some months ago which i sold one on my spare car to Tom above and the car on here is my Bro spare. I have not had chance to do anymore as been busy at work but am in the process of setting up a small machine shop at home so i can make some more soon (4 to 6 weeks I’m hoping)! Will post them on here as soon as i have some more.

Cheers Nick,

Any chance you will be making some to allow the fitment of the gear diff?

Whats the rought ETA and price on the parts?

Gareth

Nick 25-08-2010 08:51 PM

would depend on how much i would need to change i have a gear diff so will have a look! price is £40 due to the amount of machining going into them!

Perhaps I ask much,

but will it be available in both versions (geardiff/balldiff) ?

thanks,
K

Nick, is this one of your gearboxes fitted to this car??

The reason I ask is because I now own the car shown....

I haven't had a proper look at it yet... but it seems to be missing the two screws that would normally fix into the bottom of the standard Losi case... is this correct as there doesn't seem to be any corresponding holes in the 4-gear gearbox casing. The gearbox does flex a bit, independant to the chassis.

Damn you beat me and my dad to that car ...

Thats a slightly older box which Nick made if im correct, i think with that box you use the brass motor plate mount thingy, that screws into the chassis?

Hope that helps?

Tom

Edit: just seen the brass mount... hmmm

Yeah that one of the first gearbox I made (Rob Fox old car Yeah?) It was not as neat as the final version and is out of a different type of material to the new ones! It should have mounting holes but they never got drilled as he should of drilled them when he fitted it to the car using the chassi as a template!

Hi Nick,
Do you have these gearbox cases for sale?

Yes, it was Rob's car... though I brought it off Paul Upton! Thanks for the info Nick - i'll have a look later & see if the gearbox is infact un-drilled - or if something 'un-toward' has happened. If its the latter - I would be interested in a new case when you get the chance to make some more :)

Really looking forward to running this car... i've been out of the Off Road game for about ten years now, but returned this year for some club meetings racing a vintage RC10 - most of these meetings were on full astro-turf & I must say that I've struggled a bit on this surface... though it was fine on old-skool grass! Want to see how this CR2 compares to the old beast that I have been running

P.S; Does anyone know what ball joints are on my car? Are they standard Losi CR? They just seem shorter than what i've seen on other people's cars?

Robfo 16-09-2010 02:18 PM

Aup, yeah thats my old car.
Nick as you know i am a lazy arse so i didnt drill the holes even though you told me to  but..... because i didnt drill the holes i was able to fit the hinge pin brace so i didnt break the hinge pin holders. I never thought it was a major problem as the gearbox was held pretty securely with the rear shock tower screw and the brass brace on the motorplate. Anyway what do i know.

Dan, the balljoints are Lunsford super duty (or it could be heavy duty) ones that came with the larger Ti turnbuckles. If you need any help with the car just PM me.

Brill! Thanks for that Rob, I think i'd like the gearbox to be a little more secure, so will add the screws... I noticed that the Ti turnbuckles were different to standard Losi CR ones & guessed the Losi turnbuckles would be too long aswell?

Anyway, its a nice car in sweet condition... i'm looking forward to hitting that bumpy stuff with it!

Quick Q Rob, what sort of gearing would you run on it for a 6.5BL? & Nick whats the internal ratio for the gearbox once the extra gear is added.... am I correct in thinking its still std XXX - just rotating the other way??

Robfo 16-09-2010 04:22 PM

The turnbuckles are thicker than standard so you have to use the Lunsford ends.
On gearing i really cant remember, did Paul not give you the setup sheets, it'll be on there.

Hope you enjoy it! Its ace indoors at Worksop!!

Tom3012 16-09-2010 07:32 PM

Think i use a 75/25 on my CR2 if that helps, thats using a 6.5 motor...

And i THINK, but stress the word think, the gear ratio stays the same? Could be wrong though?
