501x - Motor Gearing & Timing?

Hi,

Ive just got myself a 501x and am a little unsure about gearing.

I have fitted an 87t spur gear (instead of the kit 96t) and am running a GM 5.5 Sintered Rotor brushless motor (equivalent to the Orion Vortex I think) and a Nosram Matrix Evo 2007 Edition ESC.

Couple of questions:

1. What size pinion would be a good starting point?
2. Do I need to adjust the timing on the motor to run correctly with the Nosram ESC and if so to where? Ive read some conflicting answers on this.

Cheers Jon

I'd leave the timing - Woody ran this motor for the first time last weekend with the same controller with no problems.

I run 15 / 16t pinion with a nosram 5.5 - I think Stu put on a 17 with the Orion 5.5

I run my 501x with novak brushless motors. I am not sure how they compare to the Orion ones.

5.5 Novak 87/18
4.5 Novak 87/17

The car is very quick, and doesn't get too hot, though I am very smooth on the throttle.

Cheers guys - thanks for the prompt replies.

I think I will go for no timing change and a 16t pinion for starters and take it from there.

I have the follwing setup:
LRP Sphere 4.5
GM speedo
Kit spur 96
Kit center pulley
White kit diff pulley rear
Black kit diff pulley front (one way)
6 cell

Now I have for sure not tried enough to find the right gearing but I would appreciate if you could give me a good start.

I read that the car should be uncontrollable with this type of motor. Well I'm for sure not trying to achieve that I didn't just believe those comments. I have run the car with a 18t pinion now and the car behaves quite well. Not too much power in any way. Therefore I would like to know if I'm totally wrong with the current gearing. Should I gear down? Smaller pinion?

Thanks in advance!

Why do people insist on using the 87 spur! It has no positive effects on handling/balance and only reduces the number of ratios you have in your arsenal especially at the low end (needed for brushless) following a conversation with jurgen at lrp the 4.5 motor should be geared around 17t/96t with the ability to go 1tooth up or down on the pinion for track tuning.
