ZX-5 - Weird sound when accelerating
 

I got a weird sound coming from my Lazer ZX-5 when I accelerate. Especially noticable on grass and gravel. I drove it through the grass out in the garden, and it kept making a "clicking sound" like crazy - I give throttle, and the clicking appears and it will not move that much forward.

I have tried tightening it a lot, and it's gotten quite better. Am afraid of tightening it too much though. Still makes that noise, like a *clicking* sound, especially when accelerating on gravel. Only barely when accelerating on the asphalt. And as you can hear from the vid clip, it makes it when blocked.

Is this normal? Or has something broke? Should I tighten the clutch even more?

sounds like a stripped bevel gear in the gear box. take the gear box tops off (probably the rear one, and check the gears. the smaller gear will probably have very rounded teeth and be slipping against the diff gear.

common problem with lazers. make sure you shim the diff gears a bit tighter than the manual says. move one of the shims from the inside to the outside to tighten the mesh, shouldn;t have a problem after that

i found shimming the gearbox tight and bedding in on bench the best way:thumbsup:

It was actually the front one, Jim. I was also convinced it was the rear one, but nope. :)

hmm, it was mostly the rear when i ran one, as the rear delivers most of the power.

As Bert says, shim it up tighter and give it a quick blast to settle the gears in. also make sure your slipper always has a tiny bit of slip, otherwise you will go through bevel gears quite a bit!

Just put in an order for fifty gears!
...nah, I think I'll rather loosen the clutch. I think it might'v been quite tight.
