The Best!!

I'm curious after the Schumacher thread to see who you all think is actually the best driver of all time for F1.

Let's keep it simple though eh? :)

peetbee 03-08-2010 07:51 PM

Keep it simple? But where's Gilles Villeneuve, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill, Fangio, Stirling Moss, Ascari, Mike Hawthorn, John Surtees or Niki Lauda?

The trouble with these polls is that you get people asking where their favourite driver is, people saying what is x, y or z doing on that list and when you say of all time, thats a lot of drivers!!

Ps I voted Senna!

Shaun 'TheSheep' Atkinson 03-08-2010 08:02 PM

Gilles Villeneuve is on there :)

Well i was going to put all the drivers on that i could possibly think of but was going to finish it after i'd sorted some other stuff, and just realised you can't edit it once you posted it like you can a comment

peetbee 03-08-2010 08:06 PM

Sorry missed Gilles, speed reading and trying to post a 'clever' answer before anyone else!

Ooops!:woot:

SlowOne 03-08-2010 08:10 PM

Why not put Schui on the list? At least we could compare the votes he gets as there are a lot of fans out there (misguided fools!! :D).

Senna, who I did see live several times, and always made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up...

mark christopher 03-08-2010 08:13 PM

but even sena took somone out to win the championship, and made it clear he was going to!

racdeaf 03-08-2010 08:13 PM

Nigel mansell ?
he my all time favourite

poopers 03-08-2010 08:28 PM

While it’s difficult to compare, my opinion is it’s between Senna and Clark. Probably Senna for pushing everything right to the limits.

Shaun 'TheSheep' Atkinson 04-08-2010 07:35 AM

BUGGER!! i forgot Schumacher, the whole point of the poll and i forgot him lol (thats how important he is lol)

I know i've missed a few people out but you can only have a maximum of 10 poll options on one thread :(

Jimmy - We need more poll options  lol

Nick Goodall 04-08-2010 10:48 AM

Completely pointless - How can Hamilton be the best ever if he's only been in F1 for 3 seasons? Surely you can only actually count drivers that have retired.... (so that counts out MS too)!

If next year Michael comes out in a Mercedes car that's much improved and wins the championship then people will say it's down to the car, if he is anywhere other then 1st people will say he's past it.

I think Senna is the greatest of all time, but i wasn't around to see Fangio, Clark or GV racing so my opinion doesn't really mean anything.

Equally if Lewis wins this years championship and goes on to win 5-6 more, i would then probably start to think he is possibly the greatest?

See what i mean?

Gonky 04-08-2010 11:05 AM

The fact that Mark Webber is up there made me laugh!

Shaun 'TheSheep' Atkinson 04-08-2010 05:50 PM

Being the best driver doesn't mean they have to be retired  it's about how much skill and natural talent the driver has. That's like saying the best RC driver HAS to be retired! when in fact there could be somebody start racing next week and you could think he has the most natural talent and skill you have ever seen, and kicks everyone's arse! :bored:

The question isn't who had the most deliberate accidents, it was who was the best driver. From that list, Senna.

(Although if Jimmy Clark had been on list...)

Mouton 06-08-2010 01:09 PM

I actually reckon Schumacher is the greatest. He is not the fastest today, but he is the one with the most championship titles and that is a measure of greatness as good as any (as it excludes any personal bias).

Fangio was also extremely succesful and was perhaps a "better" driver than Schumacher, who knows? Senna and Superswede Peterson both died before their time and who knows what they could have achieved if allowed a full racing career?

Or...
Is Jarno Trulli the greatest? The slowest guy ever to stay in F1 for so many years?

Jamie.T 06-08-2010 01:22 PM

I voted Senna, what a man he was, his drive for winning and his passion was amazing. You just don't see that in drivers these days.

dave-p 06-08-2010 01:37 PM

best

how can you have the current f1 drivers in a best list, half of them are still in nappies, the best driver in my opinion to ever walk on gods earth was our very own jim clarke.

just brilliant. (closely followed by ayrton senna who was also brilliant).

pitwizard 06-08-2010 01:57 PM

Senna :)

x2

however i think mark webber is not the greatest but is a good driver and prob deserves at least one world championship before he retires.

Robfo 06-08-2010 05:00 PM

Where's Alesi!!

You know he was the most entertaining!

Or at least Ukyo...
