Set up Tamiya TRF201x
 

Think it's time for a TRF201x set up thread :thumbsup:

I just built mine to kit, 35wt front, 30wt rear and I also made the pistons into tapered pistons, felt really good from the get go.

Ran mine at Taplow (indoor on carpet) 6.5 with 23t pinion.It seemed a bit too fast for me so a 7.5 next time.It went around far better in Alec Springers hands.

30 wt oil on kit front settings seems overdamped.

I'm going with 25 or 27.5 next time around

It will go an awful lot better without the 4wd front tyres :p
Get some new yellow minispikes for the rear and some slim yellow minispikes for the front and it will be excellent round there (don't bother with minipins it will make it too fierce) :thumbsup:

Built mine last week,

I race at TORCH, very bumpy track

my set up for high grip astro, goes like stink......

kit springs with 35wt front and 30wt rear and kit shock placements on towers, arms etc

schumacher blue mini spikes on the rear with yellow staggard ribs on the front

1 degree positive camber on the rear with the 3 degree toe in kit hubs, 1 degree negative on the front and 2 degree toe out

thats with nimh's and a checkpoint 10double

Not sure if this is new news but according to the Tamiya website they got the springs the wrong way round on the front and Green is the hard front spring, not black! Black is medium! Thought I'd post it as I ended up using 511 springs on the front of mine as I thought black 201 springs were the hardest and couldn't work out why the front was too soft still with them!

does anyone find that this car understeers entering turns, and oversteers exiting? The worst of both worlds. Current kit setup but gone in one hole on front tower. 30wt front and rear. ride height 22mm front and rear

No - the opposite.

I find the car has healthy understeer on-power, but very quickly reacts once the power is off. Whether it has too much, I'll find out at the next meeting if there's a chance to put some real horsepower down. I'll do some testing mid-week.

But after one meeting, it goes well out the box. I didn't do it justice today, but my friend took TQ and the win today at the Scottish Championship round. AFAIK, he's never raced a buggy before - quite some feat! (well done Scotty!)

I can vouch for that, racing on astro the does car exactly that.

Everyone who I let drive my car was amazed how much steering the car had.

How that hell is HARD.MEDIUM.SOFT considered "PRECISE" WFT? Are these springs for a HORNET or a TRF car? How about some spring ratings? Wire thickness? Weight? Common! :)

AE springs from soft to hard : brown ---> black --> green
TRF201 springs from soft to hard : brown ---> black --> green

any coincidence?;)

lol well if thats the case, ill be grabbing a fresh set of AE springs.. they get color and spring rate numbers.

Thanks for the kind words Dom. I was going to register on OOPLE earlier in the week but work just got in the way. Thoroughly impressed with the TRF201 especially since i've never ran a buggy for 22yrs, always doing on road for the last 6 years. This buggy just reacts to whatever you do with it, each change just seems to work effortlessly. I went to Falkirk today and won the A main by 3 laps. Car is getting better and better every run, just got to get a 4wd now lol.
Can i just say that i think this site is absolutely superb for off road and wished i had joined years ago, keep up the good work guys.
