SP 5.5V3 motor temp...
 

Hello! Today I was tested my new SP v3 5.5t motor... After 7 min of practice I'm having 110 degrees of celsius!!:o Mine overall gearing is 9.86. I'm using neutrall (0?) timing on the motor. I have the holes in the body, but temp of Air was 32 degrees today.. Help me please, is it normal? I was tryed min timing on ESC.. But! After 5 min practice I having 100 degree... :(

sounds like your way over geared, what car pinion and spur??and whats the track like

I have running Tamiya TRF511, Spur is 91, pinion is 19. Gear of the car is 2.06.
Our track has astroturf surface with high/medium grip. And the track has medium size, smaller then Bilbao's Euro track.

The manual of the motor says, what 5.5t motor can running on 8.8 overall gearing..

dont know alot about the tamiya, but may be drop a cog or two,our overall ratio is slighlty lower,im sur of the tamiya boys will be along shortly with pinion and spur ideas

How hot is safe with brushless motors?

My motor gets pretty damned hot but I think brushless can take much higher temperatures than brushed motors.

Obviously a lower temp is pefered as your car will be more efficent. But I dont think that a hot motor is a major source of concern. Should I be more worried about motor temps?

I know that novak velocity motors should not exceed 80oC but i dont know about others.

Hi i had this issue with my 511 when i geared Noavk ballistic 6.5 @ 91/22 now i have dropped to 19 im getting 80c on both motor an esc.
With a 5.5 id drop to 17 on astro

I think it's the same for most motors. The high temps will desolder the connectors inside and the magnets loose their magnetism when reaching certain temps.

Motors can get hotter when little or no parts of the track use full throttle.

I found using a 6.5 instead of an 8.5 on a small track increased temps.
On a large track the 6.5 stays very cool.

Try a higher wind

High temperatures reduce the magnetic force of the rotor, which then reduces performance AND causes further heat, its a vicious circle. The magnetic force will return when cooled, but it does reduce it overall if you keep doing it - and then it'll always run hot and slower than it should.

Don't use a fan on the motor, it'll just make it seem cooler on the outside when its still hot inside. Fans are only effective on motors which are running right to begin with, the additional cooling will aid performance (cold magnets are most effective).

And what I can try for lowering temp?

Any drivetrain drag - it should roll freely, gearing (under is as bad as over), suitability of motor wind for track... these are the main things to check.
