B4 diff, Which greases do people use?
 

I'm just about to rebuild my B4 diff, Are the associated Black grease and Tranny lube the best or is there secrets i'm missing out on? I'm going to use some ceramic balls so do i need different grease?

U can use the greases, which are included in the kit as well.

But if ur using ceramic diff balls u ar able to use less of the silicone lube, as u normally use for the carbide balls...

B44 ones are silky smooth and I've done loads of races on them. B4 ones developed a flat spot so I replaced the balls and so far so good. I suspect the B4 one was over-tightened :blush:

As a pro you should use the asso black grease for the diff ring side to the diff outdrive hub, so the diff ring is "grippy" on the outdrive - very very important

Inside to the 3/32 balls you use the standard diff silicone lube from asso.

for the pressure bearing you use the black grease too.


Dont use ceramic balls for offroad - the surface of siliciumnitrid (ceramic) balls is moore flat and smooth then the carbid balls- and so it is impossible that the balls can cut right into the diff ring. So you have no grip between diff ring and balls and no good traction in offroad- in touring car Scale racing you can use the ceramic balls.

B-grease for thrustballs...<Losi diff lube for...the diff...for me it work ase..

Whats the point in putting grease on the outside of the diff rings if you dont want them to slip? dont use any grease at all!!! simples. I know it says in the B4 manual to grease the outside, but I never have and have never had a bad diff.

I disagree with the advice given regaring diff ball types. Touring cars are a hell of a lot harder on diffs/transmission with massive power going through them. An off road car is protected by a slipper, if it is set up right the diff should never slip, plus they dont have as much power because of the limited grip.

I think your diff balls will work a treat, just stick with the kit greases, they are in the kit for a reason.

If I'm not mistaken, the grease on the outside of the ring is just to help it stick there while you assemble the halves. Nothing more. I might be wrong though...:lol:

I spoke too soon about my B44 diffs. the front one undid the bolt last night :(

CODMAN,I think you are right, apart from holding bits in pace the grease on the outside serves no purpose.

the grease will provide a hydraulic action that helps hold the diff ring in place, and prevent damage to the back side of the diff plate and diff cup,thats why theres a recess there to fill up with grease, I'm sure there a million other reasons as well but that'll do for now,

Sorry Carl, I was actually agreeing with the other guy, I think it's there just to hold in place. Grease or not if the friction of plate on diff outdrive wasn't more than that of against 12 smooth balls (so slipped) something would be seriously wrong.

I always assumed the recess was just for lightening it.

I've no factual basis for this of course, just what I had assumed.

that might be true, but we were show to do it that way 8 years ago buy a certain somebody? are diffs are always perfect and never ever slip.and u can use both sides of the diff ring,im guessing u mark yours up the other way,

I'm not saying I never put grease there, but I certainly don't do it religiously nor spread it our evenly or anything. I always flip the plates no bother and not had a problem with damage, as I said above, if they were slipping outdrive on plate you've have something badly wrong.

As long as people are happy doing it their way and it works for them then all's good.
