ipad ? wi-fi or 3g, or mifi ?

Anyone else ordered an ipad ?
I've pre ordered the wifi only one, and am looking at mifi solutions for the odd time I need data on the move.

Anyone got any thoughts or tips on mifi solutions / tarifs ?

I've had one for a couple of weeks now, awesome thing, only downside is no multitasking but that will come with the next OS update hopefully.

I've got a wifi one as it was the only one out at the time but apart from taking it to a mates to show him it hasn't left my house so the 3g requirement isn't there for me.

Mifi does seem like a good product/solution if you are only needing data on the move sporadically then it should be ok, it can also be used as a hot spot for any other wifi enabled kit you might have too. The only downside I can see is that its something else to carry around and it will need charging too. It's a shame the iPhone doesn't tether to the iPad as standard (it can if jailbroken) but I can see why it doesn't.

No multi-tasking ? Is that the same on the ipod touch / iphone ? I assume it's not really a problem as I guess you don't really need multiple apps open at once ?

Can't wait for mine, think me and the missus will be arguing over it....

Yeah it's the same OS as the phone/touch really. The only time multi tasking would be useful for me would be to surf and have MSN running or to surf and have music playing from youtube. The ipod element works in the background as it is.

I dont get the ipad myself. i mean whats the point? its just an over sized ipod touch. not to mention theres no usb etc. to me id rathter wait till other companies release their offerings. i know dell,hp anad a few others have their own pad style devices in the making plus theres a german tech magasine released one (cant remember its name) but already betters the ipad offering a full fat linux OS, usb and flash support also has a price tag of just over 200 bucks i think

There doesn't need to be a USB port, thats what your main computer is for, the ipad is predominantly for surfing on the sofa or using whilst commuting etc. I admit flash would be nice but it's something thats not really effected me.

Yes they are expensive but what apple product isnt.

jim76 17-05-2010 07:26 PM

exactly Rowan
it's not like you can install any software on it apart from iphone apps.

the format may be useful to some, but windows 7 based Atom versions would be so much more useful. Oh, and at half the rediculous Apple prices. For the 64gb, 3g version you can by yourself a pretty damn hot laptop.

trouble is, all the other versions won't have a little apple picture on the back, so the sheep won't buy it

so you are perfectly happy to pay £500+ just to surf on your sofa? When a netbook would do the same for £250 and be more versatile? Or even just use the iphone/ipod!

Bungleaio 17-05-2010 08:09 PM

Perfectly happy to pay, I didn't want a netbook as my macbook pro does the more demanding things.

Apple sold 1 million iPads in the 1st 4 weeks of them being available so I can't be the only one :D

I've pre-ordered a 16GB wifi, need to do some research now on this Mifi solution. Roll on the 28th

Absolutely ! My Ipod touch is the best gadget i've ever bought - period, I use it every day. The only down side to it, is, it's too small. Ipad - problem solved.

Yeah, it's expensive, but apple kit lasts for decades. I've tried various netbooks, all crap for what I want. I want something that's on in an instant, check my mail, surf a bit, control my apple tv, and the rest. Only problem i'll have is prising if from the clutch of her indoors.

Anyway, don't want to get into another apple bashing thread... I'm only interested in mifi solutions now as I pre-ordered mine on the day of release. Couldn't justify paying every month for another bloody phone / data contract !

You buy an iPad because you NEED an iPad, simple. A Nissan Micra will drive you to the shops but a Range Rover will get you there in style. :D

I am getting the 3G/Wifi 64GB model!
