511 owners - diff covers ?
 

Hi Guys

My 511 should shortly be here so im getting together the final bits and bobs to make it right from the off.

I have bought most of the option parts recommended on the TRF Racing website but havent yet taken the plunge with the diff covers. Are they a luxury or a necessity ?

Also, whats the difference between the long and short versions ? Do i need one for the front and one for the rear ?

I didn´t race them yet so can´t tell you if they are really necessary. As far as i know Fredrik designed the Rear Cover first (the long one) which has the advantage that stones and debris can´t get to drivetrain easily.
When he designed the Front Diff cover i think he worked ove rear one again and shortened it. Advantage is that it is lighter bus not as effective to hold stones and dirt outside. I hope this is at least a bit correct. If not, please correct me, Fredrik :D
All i can say that the quality is perfect and from what i heard from people who raced it, the covers really do their job, are light and very useful. You don´t have to clean your diff as often as without the covers and it will last longer.

Hi Rich, sorry I never got back to you!! I use the rear short one, well worth it in my opinion but not sure the front's as necessary as it's less exposed. I'd go for short!

Can tell from experience that it is absolutely necessary to have the long rear diffcover when racing on loose dirt tracks. Small stones find their way in otherwise. With the long cover it is no problem what so ever. Almost like you could run it with the lid off a still have a clean diff.
If you run soley on turf/grass the short cover is sufficient.
Who said size does not matter??:D

What I cant figure out is why Tamiya designed it the way they did from the beginning with an open diff. Like asking for trouble. And why haven't they picked up on the idea themselves and made a diffcover?
God thing for Fredrik if they dont, but they must thank him for selling more cars. I would not of bought one if he haven't invented that cover. I wouldn't last one heat without having to replace the belt and pully on a typical Swedish track. This year we have at least three turf tracks in the country.

I ran the car without a rear cover and it was good, then went for the long rear cover and haven't had to toch the diff since. Took it apart at tally for a look and it was spotless inside:thumbsup:
Only prob with long cover is, you have to trim the rudebits centre weight for it to fit:D

I have compromised and got the short one coming along with the Rudebits tray - Frederik has emailed me back already :thumbsup:

Which of the weights would you recommend i use with the tray and a SP 4200 lipo ?

its a really light lipo pack compared to my LRP`s.

I think the 2 side plates plus a single centre plate when together with your 4200 cells will match the weight of the LRP's :thumbsup:

I run the speed power lipo's which are very similar to yours in weight and for my driving i have pretty much settled on two. My car is 2 to 5g over the weight limit:thumbsup:
