zx5 rear diff stripping problems
 

went racing today with my zx5 sp and stripped 2 rear diff bevel gears within about 5 laps after 1 st one went i changed both gears
anyone else had this problem or can help !!
will be appreciated ??

You need to ensure the diffs are shimmed tight when you build them, no backlash in the bevel gear at all. If shimmed correctly, the diff will last for ages without any problems.

I am also having the same problem with the rear diffs strippin (twice now). i am using an RTR zx5 with a 5.5 turn BL motor in it. I was begining to think that maybe i just had too much power going through the transmission. I will have a go at shimming it up and post the results after this weekends racing.

is there an option to the standard rather plastic looking gearing for something a bit stronger???

Nope, they're just fine as long as you shim them right, mine lasted over a year and a half and only got changed as they showed signs of wear.

Fabs - wow quick reply! and i will shim the new ones up tight as you reccomend but can i ask what motor you run just so i have a comparison? my son also runs a zx5 but with a 10.5 and his one has been fine.

I shim the gears so that there is minimum play between them, they shouldn't any be tight spots at all.

I've ran a 5.5 until last autumn, but then I switched to a 45C lipo and couldn't handle the power so now I'm using a 6.5 and it's still plenty fast.

if you search for diff in the Kyosho section under my name you will find a post in which I explain how I build my cars ... have NEVER had a gear failure on a Kyosho using this method even when using 4.5R etc.

If you have a readyset Lazer and the diff gears strip. Replace the housing and the full bevel gears. then follow rogers advice for re-building.
The gears will last a long time that way. oh and 5.5 thats just crazy!!

Running a 6.5 in my rs with STD gears with no problems! Just take time to mesh them right! Also make sure the diff case is tight and the screws do uptight and haven't stripped.

I run a 6.5 too and thats plenty enough:thumbsup:

Shimming the diff up worked perfectly!

Up untill i went head o into a tyre then tried to power out resulting in me melting the whole dam thing by not having the slipper loose enough :(

i have now ordered a new complete diff with the upgraded steel outdrives to see how i get on with that!

maybe i should just invest in a new 'slower' motor!!!

Once the gears have started to slip they are finished.
And at the same time they can damage the housing.

its not expensive to replace make sure to use some ring gear grease or similar and they will last a season.
