Schumacher Stagger Ribs

How are we mounting them, I know about cutting the inner bead off the rim, but what about the tyre and do you need an insert?>

sparrow.2 19-04-2010 07:27 PM

I never cut any ribbing off the wheels. All you need to do is trim the bead on the tyre down buy about 1.5mm so it fits the wheel nicely and then glue the outer bead only, leaving the inner one unglued.
Either that or trim the outer rib off the wheel so that the tyre bead sits properly. I feel that makes the front end have a little more grip overall but feels less precise.
If you dremel the staggers they will last longer too and have a bit more grip.

Noone I know runs inserts in them.

I had this same conversation with TomCock a few weeks ago. Mounted on narrow wheels with no insert.

And dremelled like this:

I mounted some up recently (on Kyosho rims) and didn't have to trim the tyre at all?

thanks a lot, so no insert and narrow rim, trim tyre bead to suit the wheel.

is there any reason behind all the dremmeling of the tyre?

What are these like to run with? Considering buying some for the next race, but thought i'll ask before i order from mk racing

I think it's to give them more bite, without them digging in like minispikes can.

I found standard ones pushed at Tally, I went to minispikes but I think I'll try dremmelling a set just to see too.

seems like a lot of work though!!

millzy 20-04-2010 09:07 AM

Nah its not that much work- putting a slot in the blocks dose make them much better

DCM 20-04-2010 09:22 AM

what you use to do it, the XFactory tool??

Chrislong 20-04-2010 09:33 AM

Careful when dremmeling, I did a set and ended up with burning hot rubber sprayed up a t-shirt which wouldn't wash out, so I binned. Oh, and don't get it in your eyes.

Ive run them back to back at Belgium, and although cut tyres is marginally better. Effect on lap times is tiny, and for the bother of spending ages dremmelling, I decided to not bother and use a front wing instead.

millzy 20-04-2010 09:35 AM

hahah now now. yes i used my Fav set up tool, i have tried the both + - cut into the blocks, didnt see any diffrence in the two.

DCM 20-04-2010 10:20 AM

which dremmel too do you use to make the cuts?

sparrow.2 20-04-2010 10:31 AM

A thin cutting disc. And hold the dremel so it's spinning away from you or you'll get covered in tyre gunk.

It smells great too

elvo 20-04-2010 10:32 AM

Metal Diamond disk is best. Stone disk works but tends to spray liquid rubber everywhere.

millzy 20-04-2010 10:49 AM

I used a thin metal disk, and did 2 passes on the cuts

I ran staggers for the first time on Sunday at Bury and they seemed good even with foams in (Read this post a few days too late) and without cuts, I just found the car pushed a little. Is it worth taking the foams out an risk knacking the tyre or just put cuts in and hope they arn't worse?

I mounted them on a cut down JConcepts wheels and they fitted great :)

Matt-h 20-04-2010 11:29 AM

i managed to fit them to standard B4 proline rims with a mr O soft insert.

Just a bit of huffing and puffing for 10mins.

Have i done this wrong?

matt

mikeyscott 20-04-2010 12:00 PM

When I got a set ready at Petit RC people said I should do them without foams. Too late as mine are on B4 rims with foams and will go on the SV when it arrives. I'll get them off if they are rubbish and do them again.

Just need to look into this cutting of the wheel to suit the slim staggered rib

MRD 20-04-2010 04:14 PM

I used a tyre truer and a hacksaw to cut down the rim nice and neat
