SC10 Diff/Slipper - Loud Clicking Noise
 

Been having problems with my SC10 slipper. Getting a very loud clicking noise under acceleration. I thought it was obviously a stripped gear in the diff, so I took the diff apart cleaned everything and refilled with diff oil rather than black grease as per the SC10 kit manual. All the gears were in perfect condition.

So I then looked at the slipper, the spur gear is fine, the pads, I took out a roughed them up with some low grit paper, but to be honest, the pads aren't too bad. I noticed that the inner alloy slipper cover has a rub mark where it has been rubbing on the motor plate, everything else looks fine including the idler gear and shaft. The slipper spring and nut is fine also. I have tried the slipper adjustment, loose then tight, then put it back to stock setting, 3 turns from flush.

But still the truck sounds awful when lamping the throttle, any idea ? The truck is still fairly new and this was the first time I've had the diff and slipper rebuilt.

But the click noise is driving me crazy, really does sound like a stripped gear, but the gears are fine.

Not really any use but my B4, with SC10 makes a clicky noise.

It has done since I put it in and I have stripped the gearbox and diff down but still not found anything.

It runs ok it just clicks

hay dude its the diff clicking when you build it when it was new the manual says to shin it once but you got to shim it twice then the clicking goes

the shims go un the pins on the out drives

Thanks, for the info i'll need to look at the shims. The diff feels fine outside the truck, but i guess another shim might help.

I've now upgraded to a 10.5 brushless system, I changed from an 87 spur down to a 75 spur for better gearing options, but still the slipper is not working as it should. Loud clicking noises under throttle, the slipper appears to be slipping way too much even when tight, I have tried adjusting the slipper nut each way and still no luck.

I have rebuild the diff an checked all the gears twice, no sign of wear on any of the gears, I also checked the shimming of the outdrives and everything is as per manual.

I never once had a problem with my B4 diff and slipper, but with the SC10 I just can't seem to get it right.

I have roughed up the slipper pads and cleaned them with motor cleaner and checked the spring and slipper nut, to make sure its not loosening off. The spur gear looks fine, is it possible that the pads could be turning inside the spur, should I glue them ? I notice the inside slipper cover (alloy) has bad rub marks where it must be rubbed against the motor plate, could this be cause the whole slipper unit to move ?

Also when holding the rear wheel and slipper and turning the other rear wheel by hand, you do hear a loud clicking, which would indicate that the diff gears are damaged, but there are not, I am just about to give up on this.

Not sure why you're concentrating on the slipper, because unless you have a small rock or debris in the spur gear or a bad pinion (which I would guess you don't since you've changed them out) it would tell me that the "clicking noise" is not coming from the slipper/spurgear area but instead from the diff itself.

You don't mention that you've gone in and given it a thorough inspection and rebuild, and I would start there. Gear diffs can be kind of persnickity if not new and shimmed perfectly. (it's also why some guys have changed their tranny's out for T4 geaboxes so as to use a balldiff)

1) Your B4 had a balldiff, your SC10 has a geardiff -- two entirely different animals.
2) by "upgrading" to the 10.5 brushless mill you're exasperating the problem by adding MORE power
3) the "loud clicking" you're making it do by turning one wheel by hand DEFINATELY IS a sign there is something amiss with your geardiff, and all the visual inspecting you're doing is just showing you're not quite sure what to look for. Lack of proper shimming is most likely the issue, but it could be that you've damaged the teeth and will need to replace the diff and/or its guts.

The Clicking IS the diff gears slipping. I had this on mine, sounds terrible and really affects the way it goes. Mine did it but there too was no sign of any wear but it won't stay that way.

You need to strip the Diff, and just mount two small shims underneath the pin (Basically push the two large gears towards the centre of the diff) if that makes sense... (Basically just make the mesh tighter)

AE actually released a shim kit for the diff on the SC10 as it definitely needs it after 1-2 runs with the truck.

I did mine as per instructions from Lee and it was absolutely perfect for the 3 times i ran it afterwards - no clicking and it drove perfectly.

It may be worth checking the bolts which come through the gearbox casing into the motorplate, when I first built mine one was slightly to long and rubbed against the back slipper plate
