over heating problem HELP

hi all

i have a losi 8e { not a conversion } it had a losi brushless system { motor 2100kv } ive changed the esc to a monster mamba

the car has got a 45t spur and a 16t pinion im running a flight pwer 4s 5000mah and run it for the first time and after 3 mins the motor got so hot that it unsoldered 1 of the motor wires

PLEASE HELP as ive had nothing but bad luck with this car and its getting me down :(

niggs98 19-03-2010 04:09 PM

shane, are ya down at worksop this weekend. if so i will take a look for ya ;)

footey 19-03-2010 04:15 PM

sorry niggs no im not

Sounds like your gearing is way too high....try using a 14 tooth pinion and maybe a 46 or 48 tooth spur....are the batteries and/or the ESC getting hot too?

Marvin 19-03-2010 05:12 PM

My overall guess would be that the magnets have become debonded from the rotor. It would be worth taking the motor apart (a few screws at the front) to check the rotor. I doubt that it would be getting that hot with some high gearing.

just to add somthing else when it had the losi esc in it it never got hot its only since then new esc has gone in it :( i will try checking the motor and ill also maybe go down on pinions

then is it is since the ESC has been switched, I would check on what setup the ESC is running, to me that sounds like it is running to much timing.

footey 20-03-2010 10:13 AM

dcm ive put it on the pc and it set to 10 normal as it says on the program  it is so much confusing me

DCM 20-03-2010 11:13 AM

but that would be for the Castle Creations motor and esc setup. I don't have any experience of the Castle esc, but if your motor is getting really hot now, then there is a setting wrong, and guessing it would be timing.

footey 20-03-2010 01:10 PM

that could be correct dcm ill have to look into that abit more ;)

Marvin 20-03-2010 06:40 PM

10 is pretty low timing to be honest. Check out what Losi's standard timing is and match that for starters. It also might just be that the ESC change coincided with some other problem, an ESC doesn't make that much difference!

DCM 20-03-2010 07:15 PM

Well, a 2100Kv motor is a lot for an 8th buggy running a 4S battery, so any increase in timing will bring on a temperature increase. Plus the mambe may be able to push more current through too..... As the heat increase coincides with a change of ESC brand, then that would be my first port of call.

Lets not forget, there is a lot of 'electronic' adjustments that is done by the ESC in brushless, and all brands do it different.

Marvin 20-03-2010 08:59 PM

Is it?

The Mamba will be more capable, but I doubt it would now cause heat issues (assuming same settings) - if anything the motor will have an easier time of moving the car around with a better power supply. Then again, the extra power will cause a raise in current - current = heat, so?

Is it any faster now then it was?

It would be worth also checking the throttle curves, in case you've accidently set some weird curve onto it. Also, try reducing the timing to zero, and see what affect it has on temperature. I've always run my ESCs in 1/8th scale at zero timing (for efficiency mainly), and is another way of cooling hot components down.

footey 21-03-2010 08:55 AM

no the car is no faster infact i thought it should be quicker than it is

the throttle curve is just normal i havnt touched it i will set the timimg to zero and give that a run should i go to a 14t pinion aswell

It might be worth a try, though also bear in mind, if the motor is hot, but the ESC and batteries are cool, that points to undergearing. If everything is hot (batteries, ESC and motor), it points to overgearing.

I run a Losi buggy with a T8 2250 motor on 14/48 gearing and the motor always comes off nice and cool. I run zero timing as I am going got duration rather than out and out speed but this gearing keeps up with Nitro cars easily. In fact I think I got much better lap times with the electric than I did the Nitro.

Northy 21-03-2010 10:14 PM

Do you believe me that it's over geared yet Shane?

Marvin 21-03-2010 11:28 PM

Is there some history here then? It might explain why the Losi ESC needed to be replaced...

footey 22-03-2010 11:52 AM

nope no history just my BOSS northy told me it over geared and i just wanted other peoples thoughts the reason i changes esc was the esc was not working correct and losi gave me a credit note and thought the mamba was a better esc
