Car Hunting

Basically im getting rid of my car as soon as. Its costing too much on fuel etc.

So i want something different. I want something thats diesel, like a 1.9 or 2 litre turbo, manual etc

At the moment im thinking Golf GT 170, Audi A3 170, a Focus. any other thoughts???

I just wanted some opinions really from people that may have them etc. Things to look out for blah blah...

Cheers

Yes, Ive been in a remapped VRS diesel and it was an estate. Still getting excellent miles per gallon its speed and torque is awesome.

Ive always fancied a Golf GT TDi or the new GT TSi :wub due to ever growing family i have a Touran TDi.

How about a Bimmer danny? 320d 160bhp 49mpg or 174bhp 52mpg! 325d 194/47 330d 227/46 or 333d 281bhp 42mpg oh yeah!

Or a horrible Audi 2.0tdi........ Turbo lag is not fun.

My Astra 888 CDti is pretty rapid.

Its got 200bhp & 330 lbs/ft torque as standard.

Just as quick as a VXR with the right driver, and has returned me an average of 48mpg since new.

And with Cheap Tax and Cheap Insurance, there even more saving to be had!

Ive had it for almost 4 years now, and I usually change my cars every year, but theres nothing that I can find that will give me the same as the 888 does.

I can understand your choice, I made the same one when I changed from Focus St to Mondeo 2.2 Tdci.

Use parkers for car reviews and look at 0-60's. I would have gone for a Focus TDCI but they didn't do any high bhp diesels, only average 0-60's, I heard they were going to release something soon with a more powerful diesel engine, but the Mondeo was already getting some tasty diesel engines.... and I needed 2nd hand.

Small diesel cars hold there value well from new. Whereas large diesel cars don't although can be as cheap/cheaper to run!!!

VW Diesel - the GTI-Tdi150 in the Mk4 can be easily chipped over 200bhp - the engine is limited from factory so there quick GTI is petrol - although there Tdi engine is the better.

The BMW diesels are cheap to run, they've had stop/start technology since September 2007 on the 1 series which has then been adapted into the other series. Makes the cars very cheap to tax and run. Check out the figures on the 123d, although there 118d is adequate.

I think my next diesel will either be a Subura Impreza STi-d, or something along the lines of what I have now - as I love my mondeo. The newer shape mondeo 2.2 Tdci is now 170bhp, mine is 155bhp. Although I think mine may be the lighter.

They've been making Audi TT diesels for about 18months.

My car seems very sensitive to diesel brands, seems to run great on normal BP but anything else it looses power & efficiency on - especially supermarket diesels. I notice this more-so now than when I had petrol cars.

I'm in the same situation Danny, looking at around £12-13k i'm considering Golf, A3 but mainly the Leon FR TDI (170) - Preferably with the BTCC kit that was an option from new...

I tested one a year or so back now and really liked it, with over 40 mpg it makes it a good buy really.... Plus with the Leon you can get a much newer / low mileage car compared to the same price Golf GT TDI.

Lovely motor. I've got the baby brother - the Fabia VRS. 1.9TDi. 130bhp as standard. 6 speed and I can still get 60mpg on a cruise.

Of course with a remap it goes to 180bhp and over 300lbs/ft of torque.......

Richard Lowe 05-03-2010 12:38 PM

BMW make the best diesel engines IMO if you really want a tractor Danny :p

I've had a go in a 325 and 330 and they were ok, my Dad's Octavia 2.0 (140bhp I think, detuned version of the VRS engine?) and every other diesel I've driven has had a lumpy powerband and felt breathless at higher revs :(

Steve.T 05-03-2010 09:21 PM

A friend of mine has the Seat and it is very good in my opinion but I would recomend looking at the alfa 159.
