Best brushless motors makes ?
 

Following on from my post asking about winds (4.5 / 5.5 / 6.5 etc) i've arrived at the conclusion that I need some new motors.

I currently run an LRP X11 6.5 and a LRP X11 4.5, both with sintered rotors in my 4wd. I run a 1st generation novak 6.5 with sintered rotor in my 2wd.

Today at Bury indoors, I started off with the 4.5, big mistake, too much torque, so switched to the 6.5. Much better, but lacked top speed compared with other cars. The 6.5 in my 2wd was good, but again lacked top end speed.

So... What should I get ? Will a new LRP X12 6.5 be much quicker than my older X11 6.5 ?

Also, I know some people run 7.5 etc in 2wd, but how do you get the speed as mines not quick enough with my 6.5 ? Is an old novak 6.5 going to be slower than a nice new 7.5 for example ?

Lastly, which make to go for and why ?

what gearing were you running in 2wd andy, and take a look at speed passion v3 motors, there just the best there is,
are x6 last year 6.5 v2 speed passion was on 78/23 or 24 with a 7.5 we ran a 26 or 27

cheers for the reply. I'm pretty sure I run a 23 with the kit spur in my x6. The car is great, just not quick enough in a straight line. It's either my old novak 6.5 or my old trakpower lipo that's to blame i guess. I do like the look of the speedpassion motors, they are quite a bit cheaper than the lrp / novaks which to be honest made me think they possibly weren't as good.

i've been running a speed passion 7.5 in my 4wd plenty fast enough for bury indoors

The V3 Speed Passion motors are good Andy (and I'm not sponsored to run them *cough* Carl *cough* ;) ), but I think you'll find a new lipo will make the most difference ;)

Try and borrow a new-ish one from someone to find out. :D

Imo the losi motors represent excellent value for money as they are a fair bit cheaper than most and I never struggle with straight line speed. I know a few others who use losi 6.5 in 2 & 4wd as I do and are always on the pace

Check which Spur you're running. If it's the 81 tooth you might be slightly undergeared, in which case it will feel sluggish.

Which sintered rotors are you running in your X11's? The 14mm rotor need long gearing to feel good, otherwise run a thinner one, like a 13mm or 12.5mm. These will give you less torque and more top end.

The 4.5 is a bit useless for offroad as it is just way too quick with lipo. In fact it isn't recommended at all with lipo as it will rev until the rotor shatters...

take a look at what most of the big guns in of road are driving now Andy,there great motors run cool and fast and as you say are great value for money,

New Lipo.... Which one of those should I be looking at then ! Don't like the idea of spending £90 brick on one.. I was going to get a new cheap trakpower gold one whilst they are on offer from JE spares.

if you are at worksop this weekend i will loan you a lipo for a run or 2 so you will know the difference. the newer generations of motor are quite a bit smoother and rev well but for me a good lipo made all the diference.

Cant go far wrong with novak andy, Ive got my 5.5 geared slow on minimum punch on speedo and it's nice and fast, and it's 5.5r not a ballistic

Without a doubt: Lehner, Neu, Hacker, and Tenshock.

But all of those are sensorless. They won't cog, but it's hard to find car ESC's that will work with them.

Hacker does make a line of sensored car motors, but I have no experience with them. Their Kv is a little lower than the competition for the turn count, but that is probably due to a slightly longer and larger diameter rotor. Hacker does a good job winding their motors, I believe some are hand wound.

A brushless motor's power and efficiency depends greatly on what is called the air gap, or the space between the rotor and the stator. On high efficiency outrunners, this is kept to .5mm or below. If you can get a low turn (3.5, 4.5) Novak and use the 14mm rotor, this would give you the best torque and RPM combo.

The motor won't heat up as much, and the esc will stay cooler with the better-running motor.

Think of it like this, if one magnet is trying to more another with 1mm of distance between them, imagine how much harder it will have to work to move the same magnet that is 2.7mm away.


On a side note about Speed Passion, a few of their motors are made by Feigao, a Chinese company. Feigao makes good motors, no doubt, but you're overpaying by buying from a company that renames them.

As a part of Feigao's distributor and motor reselling program, companies can request small changes to the overall design of the motor, such as the shape of the cooling holes, endbell machining, and of course logos to create a 'unique' product for the individual reseller.

And some of their other motors are made by Hobbywing, another Chinese company. Not as prestigious, but still a good product. (again, overpriced)
