B4 Rear Bearings
 

The rear wheel bearings on the B4 FT seem to destroy themselves every meeting, have tried different brands, shims etc, but they wont last more than 5 or 6 races...

I am being carefull not to overtighten the wheels and strip and clean the whole car every run, so cant understand why they keep failing..

Any idea's/fixes welcome..:confused:

Have you tried the b44 rear hubs and bearings ?

My ones have been ok in my B4's but I do change them out if they get notchy.

You can run B44 rear hubs and bearings, the B44 hub has a larger outer bearing so this should do the trick.

Or if you are feeling flush you could put the Ali B44 rear hubs on it:

you have the spacer between then in the rear hub?

I never had a problem with my SC10 bearings. the only problem was with my B44 rear hubs when 1 of the large bearings seized up and then the smaller inside ones went after a very wet event when I didn't attend to them straight after.

B44 rear hubs and bearings are a direct swap AFAIK. as long as they are built to the manual there shouldn't be a problem.

Those machined B44 hubs look very trick.... hmmm... might have to give those a go.

I don't generally comment on Bearing Threads, but if they're only lasting that long, there can only be 3 Reasons...

Your not fitting them correctly, something is damaged somewhere else causing undue loads on them or They're really bad Quality.

I sell bearings for a living of every type and description you can think of and in my life only the first 2 apply. I don't sell cheap bearings :)

I would check everything really well, maybe the hubs have worn and this is causing them to sit wrong and this then is leading to premature failure...

Have checked everything as much as possible, but apart from obvious wear its difficult to check everything is still within tolerance.

The bearings I have used are from Associated and Answer, but no idea who actually manufactures them?

That leaves poor installation, maybe.. but I would hope I could push fit a bearing into a hub without messing it up! :)

I've had similar problems with the Associated bearings but after swapping to Answer bearings and the larger B44 hubs they've just run and run.

If you get the B44 hubs remember that, besides the larger outer bearing, you also need the B44 crush tubes AS7933 rather than those used on the B4. All the rest (shims, wheel spacer etc.) remain the same from the B4.

You might be able to answer a question that has been on my mind for a while. Is it worth investing in high quality bearings for the hubs? Like Boca Orange seal.

I just wonder if the hub bearings cop such a load, that the high quality ones will fail, if it is better to buy average bearing and replace them more frequently. Will high quality bearing last longer?

I'm in no way saying you don't know how to fit them, but man, i hear that statement at least once a day when our customers start blaming us and the bearings we've supplied when one fails... It is always down to fitting or the fitment of them. So funny when the technical reports come back as to Why and How it Failed...

If you have the rear wheels severely out of balance (like with some of the tyre unglued), that will chew the bearings in minutes.

No worries, Its usually on a hung over, cold sunday morning when I am trying to fit them, so anything is possible :wtf:

Did have a tyre come off in places last time out, so will make sure they stay on for the next meeting and see how I go..

Ok, I take it 50 pence cheap but good bearings are just as good in the rear hubs as expensive ones :thumbsup:
