Dead PC
Sister-in-law switched hers off at the wall whilst throwing a paddy, no not an Irish man
No light on power button. Screen has power, so to the fan. No disc in draw to stop it booting up going round later to see what I can do anyone any ideas or do you think she has fried it? |
It should be fine, switching off at the wall can’t harm them, only mess up any non-saved files.
By fan you mean psu fan not cpu fan? First thing I’d do is check the RAM is seated properly; it’s quite common for it to slightly come out of the sockets with all the temp cycles they go through, had happen to me a few times with different machines. Check for any beeps from the mobo to help diagnose the problem too. |
Check the ac power wire hasn't come loose at the back of the tower or the wire from the plug to the transformer hasn't come loose or outb of the transformer
|
could still be the power supply, mind, whenever my local shop checks mine, they normally say "motherboards gone" which is an easy way of saying "i dunno, but it's easier to replace the motherboard"
|
if you have a fan on, on the PSU, but the computer won't switch on, you can take the side of, and try to 'jump start' the mobo, by touching the pins for the power switch, if it still don't, then the mobo has gone.
Turn it off at the plug and not the case switch, can spike the mobo and knacker it. |

all items external to the case are plugged in, she managed to check those over the phone DVM's going with me to see if we have volts out of the PSU |
First thing I would try before poking around inside is turn it off at the wall, then hold the power button in for a good few seconds. Then turn it all back on again.

psu's supply voltshttp://www.oople.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif
hd not spinning by the sound/feel of it / have a spare at home that I'll have to get to try on this one light on pc switch (it does feel a bit iffy) was working before incident but not now / tried the bypass mentioned by DCM but nothing doing  |
Do you get the beep that indicates the system has POSTed?
If so, check the monitor cables are correctly seated, and if you have a graphics card, make sure that is correctly seated in the PCIE lane. |
we have a bios
internal battery (2.99v measured) removed/replaced with the one that was in just got to shut it down, put it back in the corner and walk, every thing crossed more later |
OK guys & gals
thanks for the input, suggestions, but think it may have been the battery, maybe not. It'll be replaced as a matter of course as the pc is getting on in age now everyones happy @ #63 and the drinks are on them  and they'll be down my neck soon, hic  |
more likely removing the battery has reset the bios, would guess that switching off at the wall corrupted the bios, have come across this before on a friends computer after she was told by shop it would cost £200 to fix, ended up costing her 2 pints
