one way or not
 

Hi ive just got my self a ZX5 sp
is it best to use a one way in the front or not.
If so i have a one way diff and a one way in put shaft whats best.
I will be running out doors on grass

ive tried them both mate and dident like either the lack of brakes was a big issue for me.where did you get your sp from mate a shop or was it a second hand one its just one of my mates is after one?

I ran mine with one-way shaft for best compromise. Was mainly used indoors, though.

LOL, i got 3 one-ways + some parts with my new car.
And have nothing do to with them at local tracks.

I ALWAYS ran a centre shaft oneway in my SP.

I've never been a fan of fixed 4wd cars but also not really a fan of one-way diffs (except in the FS where it seems to effect the car in less negative ways than any other car I've ever tried them in)

But what's the difference between center and front one-way?

A centre one-way maintains the differential action on drive, a one-way diff effectively locks the driveshafts together under load / acceleration.

With a centre one-way you get all the benefits of a one-way under coast / braking (i.e. the car feels a lot more like a 2wd car off power whcih some people including myself much prefer) without the downsides of a one-way diff (the car following the track surface etc.)

For me a one-way layshaft is always the better solution if available ..... which it soon will be for the ZX5-FS, I can see my prototype from here ;)

Will you have a few of these made ready for Petite ?

To be honest Simon I doubt it! I simply have no time these days (working 2 jobs or I can't afford to race).
The plan is to prove the design and then get somebody else to manufacture them.

To be honest I think that the one-way diff will be fine at Petit as there will not be any violent surface changes to worry about.

I'll post up if there is any chance that I might have a couple ready by then though.

Dont get a one way diff, get the one way on the shaft as this gives you much better drive in and out of the corner. I tried the one way diff and was better than all wd but not as good as having two working diffs and a separate one way, especially on carpet.

That is what we are saying Welshy .... unfortunately there is no shaft one-way for the FS as yet ...

I do admit that FS parts are not easy to get in the UK, as it took four months to get just the rear wheels. If so how hard is it to fit a oneway bearing on from one of the last four or five ZX-5 models? Heck it cant be that difficult for a shaft drive.

You want to use RC Champ mate... ive ordered quite abit from him, excellent service everytime... order on a friday.. get by the latest the following wednesday :thumbsup: he has most stuff in, if he hasnt, he can get get it very quickly, he understands written english, and replies very quickly in good written english!

I'll be using diffs at the petit.. ran at Broxtowe today car was very good..i ran out of talent though lol! :woot: qual B6.. looking forward to my final.. 2 warm up laps, then 2 laps in the race,car stopped dead?? wtf!! LRP X12 seized :thumbdown: ive yet to investigate! Car was very good with diffs with my new setup :thumbsup:

cheers for that and will do in the future for wheels. Im using a 5.5 x12 and seems quite quick. Gotta get a proto spur made to use a better slipper system to stop it wheelying but other than that should be fun seeing how it compares to the zx-5 models.

sounds like the bearings need some love or oil dudes !

My LRP X12 6.5 broke after the very first lipo pack I had ... The magnet had "unglued" from the axle ! Got it apart cleaned it up with trichlo and loctited it . No problem since then .

The problem is the front centre driveshaft is only 17mm pin to pin ... no room to loose a bit of length to create the space for a one-way bearing!

Did you try Microtech for the wheels? They always seem to have them in stock!

17mm seems enough space to make one work, ive seen Manolis make smaller. What about a one way bearing instead of a two way in the gearbox so could be a simpler alternative.

Never tried microtech, may do later if my design of wheels doesnt stand up to the punishment. Hope to test in January when i get them.

Thats 17mm in length (pin-pin) for the actual dogbone shaft with a significant height difference between the slipper and front gearbox input shaft! Trust me, not a simple thing to do in a robust way!
