LA256 - King pin set

Does anyone have any of these?

I've had some on order for the last 2-3 weeks and they're now on back order so god knows how long they'll be.

I'm wanting to put the SP wishbones etc on my ZX but can't until I have these.

Not true mate .... I ran the original ZX5 king-pin ballstud and lower king-pin bolt in my SP for all it's life!

I used to actually prefer to run the king-pin ball stud position as it smoothed out the SPs agressive front end making it much easier to drive hard. In fact the only reason I've not fitted the king pin ball stud to the FS is that I've somehow lost them and not got round to ordering new ones!

from what I can see though the hubs don't fit in the carrier without it?

I could have another look in the morning and see if I was mistaken?

yeh mate i thought youd get some play where the knuckels go in the hubs without using the tophats to fill the gap or do you just shim them up??

RogerM 03-12-2009 05:17 PM

The original ZX5 king pins are the same diameter as the top hats ... if yo ujust use the screws it will slop about like a willy in a shirt sleeve but I can assure you that the older bits work fine in the SP/FS hubs .... well for over a year without issue at regionals an nationals at least ;)

I have no doubt that the actual ball joint bit will hold no problem, but I'm wondering what I do without the little top hat thingies?

http://www.web-development-server.com/parts.jpg

What do I do at the top where the missing top hat will leave some space, do I need to get some more spacers?

and at the bottom, what do I do there, as the screw at the bottom isn't thick like the ball that goes at the top?

Surely you need the top hats? Most designs that use that tophat, the tophat slots into the part that sits over the carrier (the knuckle) and secures it in place but allows rotation.

Shimming it up wont work I don't think.

Yeh, that's what I'm thinking, but I don't know. I'm relying on the experts on here to guide me

Those top hats are the parts I'm waiting for, the only part I need, I've got everything else!

RogerM 04-12-2009 12:16 PM

Ok .... the original ZX5 used a king pin ball stud and king pin that were sized to suit the hole .... they ran without a top hat so the bearing surface was between the ping pin and the plastic hub. Your original ZX5 kit parts will work perfectly well on the SP plastics ... trust me!!!! (I'm an automotive design engineer if that helps convince you I'm not completely mad regarding such things!)

You will need to space out between the hub (254) and knuckle (222) with a plastic washer. The gap is slightly less than 1mm and the king pin is 4mm OD so what I did was take a 1mm plastic washer, drill it out to 4mm and then rub it down on some fine wet-n-dry until it was a sliding fit.

ALL of my set-ups for the SP on line were running this mod .... it ran perfectly for well over a year of regionals, nationals and winter series!

Have a look at your original ZX5 manual and you will see how it went together .... only thing you need to do differnetly is make up the spacer washer :D

Roger,

I'm afraid I think you're completely wrong!

Only joking....I've managed to have a look at the car and before I read your post I kind of figured what you've just said. I tried a washer to fill the space left, but as you say the whole is obviously the wrong diameter. Just needs drilling out.

I can build it this way until the top hats I'm waiting for come.

Thanks

Trust me mate, once you try the SP with the link in that position you'll never go back!

Putting the mod on the FS before the Petit race for sure ;)

Arrggh bloody hell. I tried to put the rear end together and it turns out I'm missing LA253, something I must not of ordered I don't think.

I'ved checked with Microtech and they've got none in stock. Don't suppose anyone know anywhere that might?

is that the brass bush that goes between the bearing and the blue spacer??if it is i minght know some one that would sell it you mate ill ask him

RogerM 04-12-2009 09:01 PM

Isn't that the spacer that fits between the bearings? If so the car will build fine, just have to be careful not to do the wheels up to tightly and side load the bearings or they will bind up.

yes its that spacer that goes between the bearings and the blue ally spacer that goes between the hub and the wheel hex youl need the latter

RogerM 05-12-2009 11:25 AM

Oh, of course ... never ran either of my cars on Kyosho wheels so forgot about that space. All my cars are on the proline rear axle conversion.
