Bearings - cleaning

How do you service your bearings? The joys of winter racing?

Titch 22-11-2009 06:50 PM

i used to give them a bath in WD40.. but that was 10 years ago.. things might have changed/improved since then

I thought wd40 attracted grit etc. So wd40, then regrease with another product.

Need to get some rubber sealed bearings for the Cat SX

i give them a bath of motor spray then give them each a drop of oil after

hi, I used wd40 or motor spray

mikeyscott 22-11-2009 06:59 PM

With sheiks on or off as need to get the grit out etc

I remove em all and after a cursory look 'n clean I put em in a tub with a lid and put some wd40 or something similar in, I swish em round a bit 2-3 times 'til no solids are visible in the liquid(clean liquid each time of course...) then pull em out, drain em on kitchen roll or similar, then when dry, put em in another lidded tub containing 3 in 1 oil or sewing machine oil overnight, then I pull em out, drain em mounted on a dowel over kitchen roll(again) and then re-install when the oil has stopped dripping... phew!! It doesn't take long, but writing it down makes it seem like forever!!!

I use rubber shield bearings, but the grit still gets in...

Cat SX sheilds are a bugger to work with so I'll see how I get on later tonight.

  • Put in a tub with wd40 shake for a few seconds
  • Take bearing out and spin it for a few seconds to dislodge any crud
  • Put back in the tub and shake for a few more seconds
  • Take out of tub and then use a PCB cleaning solvent in an aerosol and spray through the bearing to remove and particles left inside and to remove all the wd40 as it is actually quite a poor lubricant when compared to a good quality oil
  • Lubricate with fully synthetic oil

Can you get Ceramic bearings with rubber seals for the Cat SX?
