Novak Rotor Replacement Know How

I am changing the rotor in my Novak motor. The new rotor is supplied with 4 shims. The existing motor had one shim on it.

Putting 1 shim on the new rotor resulted in horizontal play. Something I have noticed before on "out-of-the-packet-motors". But how much should you have/ not have. There is nothing in the Novak paperwork about this and wonder what your experiences are. I have placed 3 shims on the rotor and now there is no play at all. But should there be?

As a genral rule I would say you should have a small amount of play on the rotor(about .1-.2mm) cause if you have no play it means the rotor is 'nipped' between the two bearings, all the novaks I've used only have 1 shim, but if you have loads of play with 1 shim in I would put more in but put them at the sensor end just incase the rotor is close to them;)

I decided to stop being lazy, went into the garage and had a look at the rest of the motors. Exactly as you said. All had a small amount of play about .1-.2 mm.

Dropped to 1 shim and now feel happier about it;)

Roll on the weekend!
