WD40 on mad rat plastics

Hi, back in the day when i used to race a mardave cobra we would soak our cars with wd40 which would keep all the metal parts from rusting and also seemed to reduce plastic breakages by a notable margin, especialy on cold days,, just wondering if any of you guys that race still do it with more modern cars ?

I use GT85 to help clean the dirt off at the end, but thats it.

I used to use WD40 all the time when I first started nitro, and yes it does protect against rust fine. However the WD40 residue also attracts dirt, so next time out, it will pick up dirt more quickly and that mix of dirt and wd40 will be abrasive and that's not going to help anything.
GT85 seems different. The PTFE residue it leaves behind helps keep the dirt away. When dry it's easy to just brush the dirt off. Therefore GT85 seems better to me. However I'm not sure if it's OK to spray on the speedo.
