Damper problem
 

I'm looking for some thoughts on a problem we've got. :confused:

We changed the front springs my my sons B4 from blue to black to see how this impacted the cornering performance. With the black on the "square" white plate in the bottom of the damper has now come adrift twice ending up with the oil leaking from the damper.

We'd been doing counter clock wise circuits on a flat carpet surface to learn about the the spring effects - and interestingly it's only one side (nearside) i.e. inside of the cornering which popped it's square retaining plate.

The first time I thought it may have been a build error but when we re-assembled it it went back together ok with a "click". I've put it back for the third time.

Is there something with the softer springs which make a difference?

nope alot of the new ae shocks do this,get a rebuild kit and try new white parts,

Try filling the big white washers down a bit rub them lightly on both sides with some wet and dry paper. Sometimes these are slightly to big and when you push evrything in you get the snap noise but the white square is bowed slightly. You only have to take a very small amount off. I got this from elvo I think if anyone has a link could they put it up.:thumbsup:

Strange you've had the front shock blow out, I've only seen rear shocks do this. What rate is a black front spring? I thought the softest available was browns for the front and blacks for the back.
Make sure when you rebuild them you get as much air out of the shocks you can so it doesn't go "hard" before it bottoms out when the shock is fully compressed. The easiest way to do this is by drilling a small pilot hole in the shock caps to put a grub screw in, so you take the grub screw out then screw the cap on And push the shaft slowly in, this will remove nearly all the air. Now replace the grub screw. Perfect shocks every time!!

Hi Ben, we bought a packet of 5 spring ratings (#1581). The box label claims the black is rated at 3.2 lbs. The black springs have an indivdual part number of #8232.

Oops... :wtf: My bad. I just remembered reading the guide on the site by SHY.
