X6 Squared - Battery Quick Change Kit
 

Seen this advertised on the DMS website but no pics. I'm hoping Darren will see this and explain what it is...

How do you guys with Squared's go about taking your batteries out for charging where LiPo sacks are compulsory?

That kit is great but I replaced the lock nuts with the AE B44 thumb screws . It makes getting the battery out even easier.

I've slotted the forward holes and use thumbscrews on the rear. Makes changing the battery pretty quick.

I think I must be doing something wrong guys. I 've bought the quick release kit for my new (to me) Squared but my LRP 5300 lipo brick seems to fit as well as a fish rides a bicycle. No matter which way round I have the battery the strap just sits on top of the casing, with about half a millimetre gap above the top of the standoffs, so the strap is not located at all. Help :confused:.

Unfortunately, Spoolio, that's the best answer. The original X - 6 was designed in 2005. LiPo was just getting started and the vast majority were still running cells. But the original X - 6 was shipped with a battery hold-down that would accommodate LiPo. We were the first car we know about to do that.

Squared design started 18 months ago and was nailed down for tooling in July '08. Remember the LiPos we had then? 4000 was a large pack. Still today, a 4000 or 4200 will run competitively more than 10 minutes.

Unfortunately, to change the body design from back in '05 we would have to produce an entire new body mold -- $$$ that The Family would have to pay in the form of higher prices. The body is "slammed" to be as low and slim as possible, and the taller 5000+ LiPo packs just don't fit very well. Nothing we can do about it.

With the quick change kit you don't have to put the studs down so far into the posts, and that will accommodate a taller pack, especially with the low profile nuts included in the kit. However, the CF strap has been made to be a tight fit on the posts to reduce chassis flex, so the most desirable solution is a smaller pack. Anything that raises the strap with washers or shims allows more flex, but many do that.

Slotting the strap also increases flex.

You will also want to raise the body by trimming it below the cut line, and put a piece of tape under the body where the outside battery posts are so the shell does not rub on the nuts.

Yes, and rubbing on nuts must be avoided, as well as catching nuts on a pipe :thumbdown:

Never mind, somethings we just have to accept we cannot change and get on with it. Just a shame that I've only run this pack at one meeting in my B4 before I decided to get the X6 so I can't really take it back for an exchange. However, seeing as I now only have one pack I guess I can probably justify getting a second (slimmer) pack as a back up/main.

Is that why you seem to be holding them in most pictures? ;)

i use associated thumb nuts when tightened down on my big trakpower dark they locate the strap and stop it moving

Just recieved my quick change kit, silly question but do the studs simply screw in to the chassis? or should there be some kind of insert in the battery posts?
Also with regards to the lipo's being to tall, is it an option to dremmel out the battery slots so the lipo fits lower in the chassis?

It won't sit lower really cos the chassis slopes upwards at the edge which will keep the battery high

I don't reccomend dremeling the slots. Those are there to stiffin the chassis. I have never had a problem with the way it is.
