paint removal from old shell

hey guys,

ok just figured i'd ask and see if anybody has tried to do this? can you remove paint from an old shell? if so how? if not, any reason?

Cheers,

I used brake cleaner for removing paint and rubbing with paper towels (can be also cloth) but you need loads and takes quite a lot time. If it's shell that is still available then new one is way to go.

yep, brake fluid worked well for me. pour some in n rub it around then let it sit for 20 mins then rub off with paper towel. make sure to wash thoroughly afterwards before painting.

ok i'm using brake cleaner right now... the stuff is like acid :D just melts the paint right off... leaves it slightly cloudy but i noticed that if i use brake fluid after i use the cleaner it takes care of some of the cloudiness... i'll have to wash it off with soap and water of course to see the final result but so far so good

cheers,

I used some nitro fuel on an old YZ10 shell and it came up really well.

I used nitro fuel too :)

Yeah brake cleaner can leave SOME lexan as brittle as wafer thin glass or make it go as cloudy as milk. if it hasnt done so then you have been very lucky. - Nitro fuel is the best stuff to remove paint from lexan. I use brake cleaner to remove paint from styrene ( hard bodied ) shells as it doesnt harm them.

haha well i had both happen... it got cloudy and cracked when it flexed the smallest bit haha... o well time to look for a body of near the same dimensions on towerhobbies haha

thanks for the help guys

cheers,
Jim

Probably depends on lexan that shell is made of. I used for whole season repainted XXX-CR shell without any issues that was unpainted with brake cleaner - no foggy or brittle lexan whatsoever.
