Where your energy bill goes

Found this online this morning

DON'T leave the TV on standby - you will run up a small fortune.
We have all heard this advice but how many of us know exactly how much it costs?
Well, now there is no excuse for ignorance because I have teamed up with power company E.ON to find out.
Together we have compiled this handy guide to the typical cost of household appliances. All costs are per hour except where stated.
As you can see, an ordinary telly on standby uses 0.3p of electricty an hour. That adds up to 7.2p a day or £26.28 over a year.
So cut out this guide and stick it somewhere all the family can see.

That's interesting, but the costs pa are a bit suspect.
If you take the tv on standby, it assumes you are leaving it on standby for 24 hours per day 365 days of the year! :woot::confused:

You can't put exact values on like that, every device varies. I know my PC sucks more juice than my plasma :)

A list in scare tactics, that is.... some items require you to leave them on standby, like set top boxes, otherwise they don't get updates. New energy saving bulbs are costly, in lifespan and money, if you constantly swith them on and off, they are only efficient if left on and warmed up, constantly switching them on and off reduce their lifespan.

Next, they will be telling us, that when we don't have our heating on, we should turn our boilers off, turn off engines when stationary too, close all windows and doors if you got the heating on.

Rather than keeping hitting us, maybe, if they offered you solar panels for your roof, and wind turbines, so you can take less from the National Grid, and during the day, when you are not home, put electricity back in to the grid....

Bought an LG plasma a few years back now and played holy hell with them because it didn't have an on/off switch installed and the retailer for not informing me. They said that's the way it's designed, to stay on standby:mad:. Cost to me and the enviroment. It now has a switch in the power cordhttp://www.oople.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif

I turn my router off at night and if I'm out. Its very easy for someone to hijack your internet and the least they can do is try it while I'm in:thumbsup:
