Cat 2000 - I now have one (and need help)....
 
Well guys,

After all that talk yesterday and me feeling all nostalgic i went and picked up my old Cat from my Dad's mate.

As you can see it requires a bit of cleaning, all the shocks need rebuilding and there's carpet stuck everywhere but nothing major. It all feels quite nice, loads of play in all the joints etc but it'll be ok for now.

I'm going to race it this Sunday at Lee's track CML Raceway so should be interesting to see how it goes.

Can anyone remember what set-up to run on this car? I haven't run one for 8 years or so now so not surprisingly can't really remember anything...

I was thinking of the following if this sounds about right?

Front - Schumacher Shocks, Losi Red Pistons with 35wt Oil and Grey Springs

Rear - Schumacher Shocks, Losi Orange Pistons with 35wt Oil and Red Springs

I think all the camber positions and shock positions are about right so i'm not too worried about that, just can't remember what we used to run in the shocks so thought this may be a good place to start?

Anyway, here's some pics - i was happy to see it's still got the Alloy gearboxes front and rear (lower) and also full Carbon and even my old Electrics!!

Looking good Nick.

There are setups in the CAT manual regarding camber positions etc, for different surfaces. These are what I was going to use as starting points.

Ill get some pics of mine up soon.

So we've got two members of Team CAT2000 this season then!

Elliott i've got one of my old Shells for it that's in really good condition so it should look ok :cool: Yep, the speedo's a Novak Cyclone so still perfectly good enough for today, i've been using an LRP IPC v7.1 in the B3 and that's been fine :D

Chris, i have got a Cat 98 Manual at home so i'll have a look in that to see if there are any ideas - i think the camber positions and shocks should be fine but it's just oils and pistons really, i can't for the life of me remember what we used to run!

"Back in the day" i'm fairly sure i used to run

40wt AE No3 blue springs - front
35wt AE No3 Grey springs - rear

Check the front belt tension - it was sometimes a little tight with that top deck if i recall.

Hi Matt,

I'll try and have a look at the set-up, thanks for that :cool:

Last night i put Orange pistons in the rear, and 556 in the front with 35wt all round and it was far too soft - felt like 20wt oil or something....

I went to Losi Black pistons in the front with 35wt and Grey springs which felt loads better but i haven't changed the rear yet.

I think i'll try Assoc No 3's all round then, with 35 rear and 40 front.

i used to run ae 3's all round, 40 weight all round, red rear springs grey front ;)
Grey rear blue front when dry.

Maybe it's that my Shock oil is so ancient it's got frail and thin in it's old age but Asso No 3's with the 35wt oil honestly felt so thin it's silly, i've left the car with Trish and Lee to help sort out my Batteries etc so they're going to have a look at the shocks too.

I'm hoping it must just be the oil i've got as otherwise i may have to fit Associated shocks.

Hey Chris,

I wasn't able to race in the end, i had the "in-laws" down helping us do our Garden on Saturday but they decided to come back on Sunday to help again so i couldn't really turn it down to go racing as much as i would love to i don't think the girlfriend would have spoken to me again so it had to take priority.

I will be racing it soon though, Lee's going to start running on Wednesday nights so i'll race then and also at the up coming 4wd Regionals so i'll make sure and let you know how i get on!

Tristram ended up putting Losi White pistons in the front with 40wt oil and it feels really good on the deck, i think Assoc No 3's just felt too soft - i haven't quite worked it out yet but i think i'll run Losi White pistons in the rear with 35wt which should give a good balance.

I've been testing the CAT 98 over the weekend, and have a problem solving a handling issue.
While coming out of a tight grass corner, accelerating hard, the car hooks badly, lifting the front inside wheel, the back collapses. There is no problem on concrete, where the car does not dig in. I went up a spring rate at the back (from grey fronts and yellow rears to grey springs all round). This stopped the back collapsing, but the problem remains, just to a lesser extent. I dont really want to go to a harder spring than greys. I have considered an anti roll bar, but dont really like the the reduction in rough track handling associated with this. Has anyone got any advice? Some ideas I have: lower rear roll centre by raising the inside camber links; maybe thicker oil to slow down weight transfer, or number 2 pistons in the rear? (Im running AE shocks, 40wt no3s in the front, 35wt number 3s in the rear). I dont really understand how the car can hook (implying too much front end grip) while lifting a front wheel off the ground??? Surely some setup gurus on here will have some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I used to run 40wt all round and never had that problem, although i did aften run a roll bar. This was on a cat SE(xy!) so it's slightly different.

Don't you want to raise the rear roll centre to stop it rolling as much? :confused:

I just ran my Cat for the first time, with Losi Natural pistons all round, 40wt in the front and 30wt in the rear. It had Grey front springs and red rears, seemed to work ok...... but a tad too soft at the rear, maybe 35wt would have been better but i was only running it to make sure it was all working ok.

That was on Schumacher shocks, but i am going to run Associated anyway as i have a set so will see how that goes.

Rear roll bar was always a must on the car. Ususally with grey rear springs - but sometimes red.
