Car keeps cutting out!!!

Hi all!! Bit of help needed please.
I used a 10x2 checkpoint at coventry regionals and my car ran fine(no overheating and temporarily stopping as it did the week b4). Its a trf 501x with too many holes in the body:D . Raced the car at ledbury this weekend, same gearing etc and it kept stopping 3.5/4 mins into race, then would go again and so on.
I had it geared at 16/96, stormforce 4200 cells, anyone got suggestions, is the speedo limited, undergeared, overgeared, as its starting to:wtf: me!!!
Thanks all.

DCM 17-04-2007 10:28 AM

what speedo is it?

GRIFF55 17-04-2007 12:24 PM

Its a tamiya volac esc, the same as a ko just reboxed

DCM 17-04-2007 01:09 PM

is the ESC getting warm?

GRIFF55 17-04-2007 01:12 PM

yes, and the motor gets quite hot

Body Paint 17-04-2007 07:55 PM

It would be the speedo that would be my first target.

Maybe the motor but I'd doubt that.

Did it slow down then stop or just stop? How long did it stop for?

Body Paint 17-04-2007 07:57 PM

And what gear ratio does that work out at?

GRIFF55 17-04-2007 08:08 PM

The car just stops, ten or so seconds gets going again and 1/4 to 1/2 lap later stops again and so on.
Ratio at 16/96 is 13.125, also did the same on 17/96 at 12.353?
Help me craig, us welsh should stick together:D .

DCM 17-04-2007 08:22 PM

undergeared and your ESC is thermally shutting down

Gayo 17-04-2007 08:25 PM

Try with something like a 11.00 ratio.

Body Paint 17-04-2007 08:29 PM

agreed!! Defo speedo thermaling.

should be on 9.5:1 or 10:1 if your feeling a bit girly.

You racing anywhere next weekend? Need somewhere to do some testing.

ANDY, I assume you know who DCM is?

Hi, I also run a 501X and yes this happens to me only when the motor needs to be skimmed. When i do it is ok untill it needs skimming again. I think its because its getting so hot. Try this and get back to me. Woody.

STU: Could you suggest a gear ratio for Andy?

GRIFF55 17-04-2007 09:50 PM

No craig, i'm not racing the weekend, could do with track time!!
THANKS everyone for the help, i'll try your suggestions and let you know the results!!!
Andy:)

GRIFF55 19-04-2007 10:19 PM

GRIFF55 25-04-2007 07:42 PM

Thanks everone for the help!!!! I found the problem out at tiverton on sun, thanks to craig harris who lent me a speedo to try, which cured it.:)
Bin for my old one now, brushless here we come!!!!!!!:D
Once again, thanks for the help

b4rs 25-04-2007 09:08 PM

my motor gets really hot and my esc nearly as hot, should it bee so hot that you can just about touch the motor to the point of it being unbearable?

Body Paint 25-04-2007 09:17 PM

If after a five minute race in 2wd your motor is that hot you may be a touch overgeared, but in 4wd that is fairly normal or if you are running your 2wd for longer than 5 minutes or in long grass it probably would also be expexted.

Pleased I could help you out Griff

DCM 25-04-2007 09:28 PM

yeah, glad it is sorted, at least mine and craigs diangostics skills are still ok.

Body Paint 26-04-2007 07:19 AM

And of course my trusty IP6 Mtroniks speedo ;)
