Home made motor run in tool
 

Hi all, me again, no come back dont run away :D

after discovering most people run there motors in (most meaning top boys) i thought id try and buy one from a store, like most do. but after seeing the prices on these (stupidly expensive) i thought id make one my self and share it with you :?

the design is very simple, basically its a box with a heatsink on it, 4 wires, amount of cells you wish to run your motors in with bearing in mind each cell is 1.2 volt i have been told the norm is 5 volt, but a few others think its too high,soon find out?? a pair of croc clips and two corrallys.

basically found the centre of the box, marked it up and drilled two holes for the screws. i tapped the holes out and then screwed on the heatsink

Then added some wireing loom:

two corrallys are used to charge the cells up via charger and two other wires connect to the motor

the heatsink is used to keep the motor in place whilst the motor is spinning, and also acts as a cooler to keep heat and wear away from the motor whilst its being ran in!

simple, and cost bugger all to make cause i had all that in my pitbox!

variable pot style resistor from RS they cost about 50p

Indeed but if you run v2's then 4.8v is fine for it!

don't think so, remember, yo uare going to be putting a lot more power than the 50p Variable Resistor should be asked to cope with.

Could always get a heavy duty multi pole switch, so you can switch between off/2/3/4cells?

i suggested a tamiya 3 step speed controller but not sure how hot it would get

Only trouble with using any sort of resistor Jim, is that it is an extra drain on the cells thats where a decent switch would be good, as it is purely on and off not balancing power by allowing it to convert the unwanted stuff into heat.

i wanted to try find somthing that could limit the voltage if i ever needed to, but as DCM said it would need to be fairly decent to hold the current.

any one know of a decent diode to smooth out the current? when using it its obvious the current is varying slightly as the motor rpm drops a little every now and then during the run in period, i want it to be as consistant as possible.

Thats the motor not the power supply allowing little dips, yo uwould be best putting a pair of cells in parrallel, so it got more 'capacity' to see paul.
