Brushed motors, tricks and tips for rebuilding etc..

Maybe Im a little behind the times when it comes to servicing my V2 motors.I dont own a lathe and can only guess what would be the best method of servicing/cleaning motors.Up until now I would run a motor directly from a 7.2volt battery in a jar of 'ZIPPO' lighter fluid to clean the motor for around 10 seconds. Is this bad? With the motor still runing I pull it from the jar and let it run for another 10 seconds then disconnect the power.I think this does a reasonably good job of cleaning motors but I wanted to be sure that this method isnt damaging the motor in any way.Ofcourse once the motor has dried out I re oil the bearings with machine oil.My local hobby shops dont even stock shock oil let alone cans of motor cleaner. Can anyone please give me some good advise or even direct me to a link for motor maintanance etc... Thankyou-Jason.

Jason,

I wouldn't dip the motor in anything, nor run it unloaded on 6 cells.

To clean it your best bet is to pull it apart and clean the can and enbell with some motor spray and a cloth.

Get yourself a bearing remover to take the bearings out of the can and endbell and then either spray them out with motor cleaner or soak them in a jar of shellite.

For best maintenance of the comm you will need a lathe to re-true the comm. How often depends upon many factors like heat, gearing, driving style etc.

Thankyou for the tips Jason, you've come to the rescue again.Ive dismantled all of my motors and Stonzy has volunteered to spin my arms up on his lathe. Most of them look really good and I havent tried cleaning these motors with the 'DIPPING' method as yet.As you mentioned I have removed all the bearings and soaked them in Shellite then cleaned them again with motor spray while spinning them a little. You get to see all the dirt wash out of them and I keep cleaning till the dirt stops.I have around 15 motors in total with winds between 9 through to 12 single and doubles.
As for the brushes-when I re-assemble the motors, how should I go about braking them in again? My charger has a motor brake in program, what should I do to have these motors running in top form again?

After cleaning and re-truing the comm you'll need to run the motor in for a few minutes at low voltage - I think around 2v is what most people use.

Since your charger has a motor run-in function it should be able to do that with no problems.
