Looking back to Race

I have been out of 10th buggy racing for around 20 years. Looking to get back into it, things seems to have changed especially with motors and battery packs. When I finished i was racing a lazer zx 4wd and coughar in 2wd, just looking for advice in terms of - if looking to just 1 car, is 2wd or 4wd more popular now, battery packs, radio gear, i guess the whole nine yards. Thank you in advance.....ps, does anyone know of/what happnened to Ian Ryan, Paul/Ian Kenningly, Richard Isherwood, Nathan Mercer?

Sounds like your from my era!.. I just got back into it in April... Richard Isherwood was our local hero! last car I had was a cat xl, still got it! Yeah things have moved on, what with lipos and brushless. The thing that really got me was the leap forward in batterys... When I stoped racing the highest capacity battery was around 1400mah! Im racing an X6 now. Its really good to drive. I never used to get on with the 2wd stuff back then but this seems different. Lipos are great, theres no messing around, discharging and cylcling like there usedto be. Brushless is great too, maintainence free!

Ishy is still racing, i think he still does the North East Regionals.

My advice is to go visit your local club(s) because that will really help you choose. For example, I live kinda halfway between Bury and Southport, so race at both. Bury tends to run open class (2 and 4 wheel drive together) so its really a no brainer - 4wd all the way. Southport runs them separate, and 2wd is much more popular. Furthermore virtually all of the novice drivers run 2wd - 4wd is almost the Pro class there, so when I race 4wd I'm pretty much guaranteed to come in last even when I drive really well.
Ultimately I guess the best option is just to get a 2wd. You'll be at a slight disadvantage if you are against 4wds but if you aren't that worried about winning does it matter?

The X6 is an excellent car, but its a conversion of the Associated B4 which is pretty decent itself. I'd say get a B4, then convert to X6 later if you want.

I raced back in the day too! When Jamie Booth was a spotty teenager and Jim Davis built the Tamworth track... ahhh....the good old days

A 2WD is cheaper to buy compared to a 4WD too.

Good old times! ;)
Yes, B4 seems the way to go. Two 3800 lipos with one simple charger with balancer & one 8.5 brusless motor. Endless hours of fun!!!
