Do you think that geared diffs and alloy chassis' are the future??
 
Wit hthe DEX410 causing penis tingles in many of us who have seen the pics posted here on oOple, are geared oil filled diffs and alloy chassis' the way forwards for 10th offroad??

Or will plastic/carbon and ball diffs still rule the roost when all is said and done?

yep im shure it will the transmission should be bullet proof ,almost unlimeted diff tuning no scew to bust or come un done should also be a lot less maintance ,as for the ally chassis yea it will be the way foward .dosnt crack or snap ,chassis felex is easy to put in or take away ,vry good heat sink so motor speado heat should dissipate faster should last a lot longer aswell

And perhaps some build in weight in alloy chassis. Low CG and less need for extra weight in the car for compensation with use of lipos.

well said dude i hate putting weight in a car and have neaver need t do so in off road even with lipos i just alter the car to suit them i even ended up putting my car on a dremmel diet

They do yes but im sure we have all seen chassis bend, i know i have. 1/10 won't be as well made as 1/8th scale though due to trying to keep them nimble

You know I could have swore that I started racing with a Kyosho Optima Mid which had an alloy chassis and geared diffs.......

Which makes wonder. Alloy gave way to carbon, which gave way to plastic - so why are we back at alloy again? Its not weight - cars weren't too heavy back then - materials shifted for other reasons.

Likewise the move to ball diffs was for a reason - has that reason gone?

I'm not saying it's not well made, im sure it is going to raise the bar quality wise just like xray did with the on road cars. My comment was purely based on i would rather have a part snap and know about it than bend slightly and not know about it.

w.r.t. unlimited tuning on the gear diif, how is a ball diff no unlimited? You thighten it, you loosen it, more or less to suit your driving/track, where is the issue?
I like the idea of a ball diff where you can take out a full diff in one piece, and throw in a one-way pretty quick. Not sure if you can do that with gears??
Alloy is the way to go, when it's been tested, and when Lipo is theonly way. Both of these aren't far off me thinks...

im shure ball diffs were brought about buy a power to weight isue early gear diffs were quite heavy if i rember right and also quite bulky whare as a ball diff is much smaller and lighter ,as we now have an abundance of power and very efficent motors the weight wouldnt be as much of an isuse. but saying that when i built the diffs for my lrp s8bx the diffs in that are around the size of the diffs that i had in my chain drive kyosho stinger 1/10 nitro buggy around 21 years ago ? so we must have found a way of making them smaller lighter and stronger, techenology and materials will always evolve and normaly gose in some sort of circle ,we now have much stiffer much lighter alloys and much beter quailty plastics ,the same sort of quetions could be raisd about flat twin deck chassis vs tub chassis ,,,,
all in all id like to see a few more differnt cars using differnt from the norm materials like the durango on the market

First of all, theoretically ball difs are a better choice with old motors and batteries. Less rotating mass increases power transmission efficiency while reducing resistance and car overall weight.

Obviously not everything could be as good. In this case continous need of adjustment and inherent weakness are the tails of the coin.

Nowadays car are faster than they could be with gear diffs, but yet need much more maintenance. Note to mention the lack of adjustments.

In my modest opinion, Geared diffs are the better option. We'll have to use a 4.5 or higher with 40c LiPo's, but our cars will be more reliable and confortable.

Interestingly when it comes to alloys no - we haven't moved forwards. The Durango and 1/8ths spec the same alloys used on that Optima all those years ago, and its aircraft spec, so I doubt it will have changed much.

The reason for the change is purely fashion. The Durango is the newest, hottest car out, its got an alloy chassis so alloy is in. If it had a cheese chassis (and didn't suffer for it!) they would be in......

ali chasis's in my opinion. its allways been the ultimate material for the chasis ,bar none!
look at the old ali pan rc10s (allways handled better than its more modern graphite brother )
look at durango 2005 compared with the aero a1 (chocolate chasis)
the only down side with ali is that it scratches and looks tired the minute it is run :o
the plus sides are its proper flipping quick as a chasis it absorbes shocks in a way that our plastic tubs cannot and most definately betters woven carbon :)(yuck .....looks nice ....but is shite for off road...leave that for those bouring car fans) inconsistant brace me up city crap!!:mad:
just my humble opinion
Ps just wait and see how sure footed and confident that new durango drives;)

simples, you can run a gear daff as loose or tight as you want, you can not do that with a ball diff as it will slip when so loose.

Only as an example:

I bought my 1/8TT gas buggy in '06 with 1-2 years of previous use. Now '09 buggy is 5-6 years old...using the original diff gears!! only cups had to be changed because of wear.

Any 5 years old light or heavily used Ball Diff out there?;)

I'm with Lee on this one, an ally chassis is more prone to bending 'tweaking' than plastic, and that would be a pain. Generally speaking, plastics tick all the boxes, the only disadvantage being you need expensive tooling to manufacture. With modern machines and Chinese wokers CNC ally work is probably much more ecomical for small batches of RC cars like Durango. Ally looks good though :D

How many of you guys actually worry about tweek though? Im yet to see anyon with a flat carbon chassis undo the top deck screws and try and de-tweek a chassi mid-meeting? Yet you go to a TC meet and they are all doing it...
Im also yet to see anyone try and eliminate ARB tweek...again something which the TC fraternity do over us offroad sorts.

I do this otherwise it just feels all wrong ;)

I usd to de-tweak the bj4 when i ran that and the aero just twisted when it got warm:lol: I dont find the x5 tweaks though and the x6 is just awesome, i do check for wheels lifting equally though. It does make a difference, ask tom, he has a special way to adjust tweak/wheelbase and toe all on one screw :woot:
