DB01 Dampers (non tamiya) advice
Hi all,
Sorry if this has already been mentioned, i did a search and looked through posts but couldn't find anything. I went to my 1st Buggy race today at Bury. Everyone was friendly and helpful and I met a few guys i see at my other local track where we race touring cars and buggies. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/vincedesi...s/Durga_01.jpg There where only 10 racers, so we where split into two sets of 5. The first race was going well and i managed to nail the jumps a lot better than last weeks practice run, and it got better each race. Had a few teething issues, my overclocked 7.2v servo wire came off so lost steering but luckily just after the line. Second race i won but again just after the line my pinion fell off :-s. I have found the hop up pinion set (13t, 14t, 15t) are a little longer than the stock ones and the grub screw is very near the end of the motor pin. the last two heats i won also so i was 1st in the B final :-) In the final i did ok but found the car across all races a bit soft with the stock dampers, the tyres gripped well but with this combination i was bottoming out a lot and grip rolling if i didn't keep myself on my toes or pushed too hard. I came 2nd in the B final so was please but felt if i hadn't have rolled (3x) so much by pushing it I could have won. Does anybody have any tips on a good damper set and a spring set thats good with the db01? and what oil do you suggest, the stock oil is 900 weight but i have found most of the club guys are running with 30/40 with harder springs. The TRF ones are a little pricey, the 3 racing ones are cheep but look a little too cheep, i hear you can use the Team Associated or Losi ones, if so has any one used these? Thanks VV |
grab a set of B4 shocks, silver springs all round, 35wt front and 30wt rear, and keep the B4 piston setup, be sorted then

Keep an eye out for a secondhand set of shocks on here (or a wanted advert) they often turn up for around £25 the set.
You can buy them as a set I believe, but does work out pricey, mind you, not as pricey as the Losi shocks! (B4 = 2wd B44 = 4wd) PS I run old non threaded Losi shocks and they work great, based the setup on the advice of DCM above |

At those prices, I would go for the Tamiya set, combined with AE springs (or even the kit Durga springs). Tamiya's own springs are very soft for UK conditions, I think the Tamiya blue front is equivalent to the AE Silver front, and they get softer from there.
The Tamiya shocks are basically a metricised copy of the AE ones, but a direct fit on the car, and easier to work on. Start with 1.4mm rear piston and 1.3mm front piston. Your bottoming out etc. is more a function of the very short travel on the Durga kit shocks, with the Tamiya shocks you get a lot more travel (they do need spacers in them otherwise you get far too much travel), you'll find that the car is a lot more settled with the longer travel dampers. Also the plastic dampers have ineffectual pistons (hence the #900 oil). They just aren't up to proper racing. |
