Recommend a strong 1/10 buggy?

Hi, I currently have a Lazer ZX5, but am sick of breaking parts on it, now before anyone tells me not to crash, I don't that often, but when I do, something always breaks - suspension arms, hub carriers, shock towers.

Is there a 4wd buggy out there which is viewed on by the majority as stronger than average? Or should I stick to what I know and keep the Lazer...I can change a suspension arm in about 2 mins I reckon...

Funny, I'd put the B44 as the worst car I ever raced since I started back in 1986, its just a horrible car, made of cheese as well;)

If you want a strong car, take a look at a Yokomo MR-4BX, or maybe a Hotbodies D4.

My BJ4 (non-WE) is pretty tough (good idea to double-up the front shock tower on BJ4s and B44s), but the Tamiya 501X buggies I've seen are built like tanks.

The Tamiya TRF501X is very strong, the wishbones etc. are almost impossible to break. But I wouldn't recommend it to beginners, it is very easy to drive and fast, but its build-up isn't always the easiest way, replacing parts can be a pain in the ass.

I suggest the OP have a look in the Kyosho sub-forum - I read one post about what upgrades the ZX-5 (is this a RTR?) needed, and there was something about simmering the front suspension parts for 10 mins to soften them...!

A big thumbs up for the Tamiya trf501 as well from me.

I had 2, the original one, upgraded to the worlds, sold that and bought a cat. I never relaly used the cat, but seen some shocking breakages that cost plenty to put right.

I moved up from a zx5, and should have stuck with the 501.. Very tank like.

If you are looking at new cars and are on a budget, Tamiya Durga. Buy the kit and the 3 Racing suspension blocks and you'll struggle to break it. Unless you get hit head on by another, similar spec, Durga.

I don't know the TRF-501X so I can't comment. Apart from the fact that Japanese cars are generally stronger (true not only in RC ;))... And TRF is japanese like Yokomo and the D4.

I have a BJ4(=B44) and a ZX5 (non-RTR, so my plastic is stronger). I don't find one stronger than the other...

Since you mention breaking wishbones etc, I would put a special mention to the HotBodies D4. Further to being designed by Japan culture, it features rubber bushing for the wishbones. It provides very clever damping from shocks on wheels (most of shocks)

strongest 4wd? TRF 501 I should say!

I race a Predator myself and take very good care of my kit, I'm still not very experienced so I crash now and then .. and in two years of racing during competition I once had
diff-problems that got solved when I had new diff-components,
broke a A-arm on my X10 previously and
only broke one bullet ball joint on my X11
So for me the X11 Pred seems very strong.

But I saw a guy once driving too wildly, bashing and crashing his 501 .. and to our amazement never broke anything.
The build of the 501 is not simple but the manual is very good.
Straight from the box, the car drives very good.
I guess the 511 will be the same.
Parts, however, can become expensive (over here?)

Whats that then, geting the calipers out and copying someones else's design? Cyclone TC = Tamiya TC, Cyclone D4 = BJ4;)

It is a pretty strong car though, although not as strong as the BX its replaced.

I would have to say the 501x, mines an absolute tank, I crashed flat out with a 4.5t motor and hit the upramp of the last part of a triple and didnt bend, break or crack anything.

Racing indoors i've hardly damaged anything with the 501x, it's just a pitty that the parts are a pain to get hold off and it's quite awkward to work on. The durga with a few upgrades should be very strong too.

Did you find those wishbones you were looking for?

mendocino 15-06-2009 03:32 PM

I've got a TRF501X for 6 months now racing it every 2 weeks and didn't break lost or bend a single thing... I think that enough said. :D

B44&501xRacerEX 15-06-2009 03:37 PM

I agree the strongest 4wd is the tamiya 501x.
I was in a race with it and we all piled up in a big crash, I was the only
one to walk away from it basically unscathed not even a scratch.
Everyone else broke an a-arm. Easpecially that Lazer SP that rammed me.
I guess they were trying to see who was gonna break first.
Me and a couple B44's got to finish. Dont underestimate the B44 either,
I have managed to not break anything on mine in the longest time.

Lee 15-06-2009 03:42 PM

It's good to have you back :woot:

ashleyb4 15-06-2009 03:42 PM

Never seen a 501x walk god they must be good.
