Ahhh i remember driving my bosses one he had as a company car back in the early nineties.

jimmy 17-04-2009 04:29 PM

this is a small bumpered car with big bumpers added right?

hazzelarator 17-04-2009 04:31 PM

Yeah I think so mate, its 88 which is a fairly earlie one think the BB came out in 90?

jimmy 17-04-2009 04:35 PM

yeah I couldn't remember what reg I had but must have been a G/89 - really loved my 16v mk2, it was ACE.

hazzelarator 17-04-2009 04:36 PM

its a mega car like, 0-60 in 7.5 secs which takes some beating even 20 years on! I'd love to keep it but i'm having a clear out of all the ridiculous cars I own and never drive so unfortunately this is one of the first to have to go!

Correct, big bumpers were only fitted on 1990 onwards.

sidecarphil 18-04-2009 01:37 PM

no they were available from 1988

but i have a big bumper 1989 car and my mate has a 1991 16v with small bumpers from factory

weird LOL

you can tell it is a later 1989 car because the front doors have no quater glass this was changed half way through 1989

nice car mate

i'll post a link on the Gti.co.uk forum for you

hazzelarator 18-04-2009 01:39 PM

How strange, maybe its a genuine big bumper then? who knows lol. Didnt they have some unusual colours and differences on the south african and German cars? perhaps ur mates is import?

BB were from 1990 model year so you could order them latter part of 1989 on a G-plate.

Deleted front quarter glass and revised indicator/wiper stalks were first seen around August 1988 (E-plate) - at least in the UK - on the "Campaign" GTI. Also I think this is the time when VW moved the wipers to a RHD fitting  but at the same time gave us the infamous grommet rot spot .

Here's one if the link works http://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/modules.p...t=6083&start=0

I'm pretty sure any cars with small bumpers registered later than a G-plate will be old-stock. There are plenty of G-platers out there with big and small bumpers as that was the changeover year. Just like with RC cars everybody wants the latest thing so it was quite common for people to ignore small bumper Golfs that were already built instead preferring to spec their own new BB version, hence some small bumper cars did sit about for quite a while. I guess it affected valvers more because they cost more and no one likes to spend big money on old news. Same thing happened when the Mk3 came out, buyers ignored the "old" Mk2 in favour of the flash new 2-litre Mk3 (idiots - isn't hindsight brilliant) which is why there were quite a few registered on a 92-93K, when the earliest Mk3's are on a J. There were even a small number of L-platers.

:blush:I could witter on about Golfs all day - love the idea of 'em, just not the reality (running a 17 year old car 20,000 miles a year is too much like hard work).

Sorry mate but no. I notice you location is the Netherlands, so it is quite possible the specs in Europe were different, I don't know, but I do know about UK spec MK2 Golfs. I have personally owned over a dozen of them, and also used to buy and sell them, so I'm very confident in what I'm saying.

The big bumpers appeared on 1990 spec cars. If you look closly at this car you can see it still has the small bumper arches and side trim, but big bumpers, which have clearly been fiitted as an after market mod. Likewise some big bumper cars have been converted to small bumpers over the years. But basically if it is a 1990 or later GTI big bumpers were standard. A big giveaway is the location of the hazard warning switch. Pre-90 spec have a switch on the dash, 90 spec have the switch on the top of the steering column, this car will have the switch on the dash.

As for the doors not having quarter light glass you're almost right. This changed part way into 1998. This coincided with several other changes, the most important being a change of injection system, from K-jet, to Digifant. So if the car has no quarter light glass on the front doors, it runs digifant injection.

Looks a decent car, and will make someone happy, but no as mentioned not originally a big bumper car.

Hope this helps.
